Oh yeah, about that...
There was golf last Sunday, so they didn't air the next episode. Next episode's gonna air this coming Sunday though.

Wouldn't be a Tokusatsu series without it being delayed by a sporting event.

Netflix now has Time Patrol Bon an anniversary edition honoring the creators of Doraemon. Average Joe Bon Hiranami, a middle schooler, stumbles into the activities of the Time Patrol. And winds up having to be recruited into their ranks. Mostly this is pop history for kids. It's been slightly updated from the original manga—smartphones exist, and the female Time Patrol officer's uniform has a Magic Skirt rather than leading to Panty Shot humor.

Mid-Season Reactions:
Boukyaku Battery: Mamoru Miyano may have carried the show with Kei's comedic and some of his dramatic moments, but I ended up simping for Nobunaga Shimazaki's character Chihaya! The sass he gives is immaculate!
Seiyuu Radio: Definitely the best moment yet for me is Yasumi standing up for Yuuhi! Shipping wise, it's smooth sailing, but now, I'm worried because of Mekuru...
KonoSuba: As expected, the comedy is of the highest tier! Especially the parts where Kazuma deals with Iris! I mean, just the recent episode is proof enough!
Bartender: It has its chill times and its hard times! Perfect for the late nights!
TotoKami: A lot more ecchi than I thought...

Double Post for more Mid-Season Reactions:
Dungeon Meshi 2nd cour: So far, Laios the Dog ended up becoming my favorite thing out of this series followed by Laios trying to answer the siren's song.
WIND BREAKER: By far my pick for the cour! If episode 1 wasn't what got me invested, EP 5's fight between Suou and Kanuma or this week's episode's fight between Hiiragi and Sako definitely sealed it for me!
Henjin no Salad Bowl: Thanks to this anime, I want to go visit Gifu sometime when I visit the Chubu area! My favorite parts so far: that awful cult indoctrination video, that PSA on reselling, and whatever the fuck Livia agreed to with Noa + Noa's simping noises.

Yatagarasu: I think Yukiya should beat Wakamiya senseless, it's within his rights lol.

Also as I thought, because of the adaptation changes they had to restructure some stuff. The context of Asebi getting the Koto and her realising Wakamiya was her the boy she met as a child were different but the ways they managed to work around it was pretty impressive. Some part of the mystery has already been exposed so I guess it makes sense not to bother with the scene.

[up]Lol yeah, just hold him down and squeeze the kumquats in his eyes, he thinks it makes everything forgiveable and sometimes I can't tell how much of his shenanigans is on purpose and how much is him being actually dense.

Finished Time Patrol Bon. It's a likable enough science fiction/history lesson series for kids. It's not afraid to get a little dark in places, and has a bittersweet ending. If your younglings liked Doraemon but are getting a bit older, they may enjoy this.

eta: Apparently, this is a split cour series, with the next bit in July, so the ending is meant to be more of a cliffhanger.

I'm finding curious how much Mission: Yozakura Family is changing things from the original manga in multilpe ways (re-arranging chapters, combining previously unrelated stories, creating multiple new scenes, changing the setting of certain events), and despite that, I feel the anime is working, maybe even to the point of improving over the manga's early chapters.

My guess is that those changes are positive since they are done with a purpose, since a lot of the new or expanded scenes help show more of the members of the family (and giving a bit more space for jokes or even personal moments), which are one of the main strenghts of the series.

That's cool to hear. For what it's worth I've been enjoying the Yozakura anime a lot.

First Episode Impressions

  • Time Patrol Bon: Caught the first three episodes. It's always a delight to see a retro art style polished up to modern standards, though the backgrounds could have felt a little less flat. I'm never been much of a fan of time-travel stories, and TP Bon doesn't do much to sway that opinion. The format also seems to be episodic, so it's been difficult to find the drive to peruse the later episodes. May drop at any time.
  • Kimetsu no Yaiba: Hashira Training Arc: We got an amazingly animated action-filled appetizer for the first 10 minutes, then the rest of the 50-ish minute runtime is more about catching up on the events of last season, mainly the defeat of the two Upper Ranks. This season is literally called a training arc, so I'll keep my expectations in check. It is nice that some other gears have started turning: Tamayo being recruited to research Nezuko, for one. Continuing.

[up] Looks like new Kimetsu season will be 5 episodes (6 if you count the opener as 2) BTW. The arc is like 9 chapters as I heard so no wonder.

And here's the last of the Mid-Season Reactions:
Maou Gakuin S2 2nd cour: It's been hard to keep up with at times, but let's see the endgame for this. Also, we get it, Lay and Misa are supposed to be an item...
Kaijuu No. 8: Gradually liking this so far! My fave charas ended up being Reno, Iharu, and Hoshina, particularly the former two (together- *cough* *cough*).
SasaKoi: Our main ship FTW! The side ships may have their interesting flavors, but I am hoping the best for Yori and Himari!! Break a leg in the concert, Yori! For Himari!!
YoruKura: I wonder if there is a chance for JELEE to continue beyond the anime, but nevertheless, this has been a nice watch!
THE NEW GATE: Pretty standard, but it's an easy pill to swallow!
Sentai Daishikkaku: EP 1 took me in with the fourth-wall break that is that call to commercial from Red Keeper, and that was enough for me to buy this sentai satire! Best of luck, D!
The Fable: I now want Kainuma to burn in hell! Also, I would probably not want to be with Youko in the bar... As for Akira, I would like to think of him as a lovable rogue!

As for the Netflix anime like The Grimm Variations, I think I'll just save it for the end of the cour. Life has been wayyyyy too busy...

Tadaima, Okaeri: Existence of Betas confirmed, which I half-suspected from the presence of a person with reddish-brown hair in the opening (also, doubling my imaginary bet that Hinata will turn out to be an omega if her caste is revealed over the course of the anime at all). Kazu's reaction to Masaki's neck mark also all but confirms that there is some form of claiming in the setting and goes a long long way in explaining why they were trying to keep things between castes until very recently. Matsu and Yuki might as well move into Hiromu and Maski's house at this point, they have sitcom levels of practically being members of the household. Also, a certain someone might be Unbalanced By Rival's Kid.

The latest episode of Wind Breaker broke me... Sure, the fight between Sakura and Togame in and of itself (so far) has been pretty cool, but it's Togame's backstory with Chouji that really hit me, nay, stepped on me hard to the point of bleeding! And that's not even getting into the credits, where you'd find out that Kazuki Ura and Tasuku Kaitou snuck into the background! This might as well be my favorite to date!

Wow, that show really doesn't sound cheesy. In fact, I guess you could say it cuts the cheese. It seems like it's really thrown fuel on the fire. Why, maybe even surpassed it. I might even say it passed the gas.

Fart.

... god, I'm mature.

Just finished The Grimm Variations. I watched it mostly because I have a long-running on-and-off idea of retelling The Two Brothers but tend to be half-hearted in terms of actually seeking other fairy tale retellings for inspiration, so things need to stop short of falling into my lap to get my attention.

I think the general idea would have worked better if the retellings had better matched something with Charlotte's background could have believably come up with. Even with the twists, both Cinderella and The Elves and the Shoemaker could have been made into stories set into the Framing Device's present day. For the stories that wouldn't have worked without their sci-fi elements, it could have been period-appropriate sci-fi. Like having Hansel and Gretel live on the Moon because most people don't have the concept of it being uninhabitable yet.

In this one, the specific fairy tale feels like the sole connection between the Framing Device and the main story.

Also, their version of "Little Red Riding Hood" had more much more violence than I felt like I had signed up for.

I am not sure what to make from Highspeed Etoile. it is a racing anime where raciong is the worst part (and I am still bothered with female commentator VA work). Though, the race in ep. 5 was a bit more exiting due to better camera work and M Cs bickering with her AI (who is voiced by Yukarin, flashbacks to FMP incoming).

So L parts of the series are at least cute and funny for the most part. I skipped two weeks of watching it and planned to drop it (yet again) but now I am not sure (yet again).

Yatagarasu: hell yeah we've reached peak mess quota! Can't save all the murder for the prince's side of this. That said the comment about how "their friend" is a secret and Natsuka almost playing up the whole evil schemer brother thing kind of makes me wonder if he's actually totally on Wakamiya's side.

[up][up][up] Yep, Grimm was pretty uneven.

[up] The rare times we hear Natsuka's inner thoughts, he seemed to be intent on snatching the rule from his younger brother. So I think it's more a case of him ensuring he has plausible deniability.
