    Ranze Eto 

Ranze Eto (江藤蘭世)

The protagonist. Her birthdate is July 27, 1968. She believes herself to be an ordinary woman until her powers manifest at age 14.

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Ranze is an adorable and kind girl. So her falling for the aggressive, handsome Shun, who has a penchant for swearing and boxes on a regular basis, surprises many.
  • Bishie Sparkles: Ranze radiates these in the manga as Shun looks at her for the first time. Also quite common in the anime.
  • Cute Monster Girl: She's a pretty vampire girl with plot-relevant Cute Little Fangs.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Ranze develops these at 14, and finds that anything she bites, she turns into. That includes things like food and paper.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Her mother does NOT want her to date a human like Shun — thankfully for her, it turns out that Shun isn't human after all.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Ranze has pale skin and dark hair and is an actual vampire, though she's perkier than most examples.
  • Dub Name Change: Ransie in the Italian version.
  • Dude Magnet: In the manga, Ranze attracts lovesick men nearly every time she turns her head.
  • Hime Cut: Though not a Princess at least not until she marries the Demon Prince a.k.a. Shun Ranze has long black hair cut in this fashion and it often blows in the wind.
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: Around Shun, her crush. Shun once uses his telepathic powers to read her mind and finds that she thinks he's "sexy".
  • Ordinary High-School Student: Ranze believes herself to be completely ordinary unlike her parents, and is shocked when her vampire powers manifest for the first time and she accidentally starts turning into random things.
  • Plucky Girl: She doesn't care what monster society or her mother says, she doesn't want to abide by their culture and follows life based on her rules.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She has white skin that almost glows and hair as dark as the night sky.
  • Swallowed Whole: Ranze accidentally shapeshifts herself into a piece of bread during a race and is swallowed by her rival, Yoko. She manages to morph back and escape through Yoko's mouth in the next chapter.
  • Talking the Monster to Death: Ranze does this to the Meioh, ruler of the Dark World and real Big Bad of the manga, just after he disintegrated the King of Magic World.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Believing herself to be an ordinary Japanese woman her whole life has led to Ranze being this at the start of the manga; she even has the Hime Cut.
    Shun Makabe 

Shun Makabe (真壁俊, まかべ しゅん)

An elusive and mysterious student who attends the same school as Ranze. His birthdate is April 13, 1968.

  • Anti-Role Model: He has a reputation for this because of his tendency to skip school and juvenile delinquent behaviour.
  • Brutal Honesty: Shun speaks without any filter, much to his classmate's chagrin.
  • Chick Magnet: He attracts Ranze and Yoko. In one episode, he even gets a letter from a secret admirer, and Ranze and Yoko put their differences aside to find out who she is because they're both jealous.
  • Dub Name Change: His name is Paul Cavor in the Italian dub.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Shun feels bad for his mother who works herself to the bone to provide for him, and hopes to become a professional boxer so he can alleviate her debts and ensure she has a comfortable life.
  • Freudian Excuse: The reason he's such a prick to everyone is because he had a rough life being raised by a single mother and never knowing anything about his dad who abandoned him.
  • Friend to All Children: Despite his aloof exterior, when Rinze runs away from home, Shun is welcoming to him and allows the little guy to follow him. He eventually helps him reunite with Ranze.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: Remember the Demon King mentioning that he had a child out there, somewhere? That was him.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: He has a penchant for swearing and speaking crudely, even at authority figures.
  • Tsundere: He is more than happy to get close to Ranze and hang out with her.
    Yoko Kamiya 

Yoko Kamiya (神谷曜子, かみや ようこ)

Yoko Kamiya is the firstborn daughter of Tamasaburo Kamiya. Her birthdate is November 8, 1968. She attends the same school as Ranze, where she is very popular and constantly maintains good grades.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: She proclaims herself as Shun's fiancee, when in real life Shun has only ever loved Ranze, and him and Yoko are Childhood Friends at best.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Yoko is a straight A student who comes from a wealthy family, and falls for Shun, a delinquent who was raised by a single mother. Though subverted as her family origins aren't the cleanest either, being a Yakuza Princess.
  • Alpha Bitch: Mean, rude, aggressive and constantly belligerent to Ranze. She's also a Spoiled Brat who's never been told no and is alwayspampered by her father.
  • Awful Wedded Life: She gives Riki a panic attack on their honeymoon after he accidentally uttered the words that transform her into a dog.
  • Babies Ever After: Ranze eventually marries Shun and has a daughter named Aira, while Yoko accepts that he doesn't like her and moves on. She marries Riki, the son of a rival yakuza gang's leader, and they also have a daughter named Mumu.
  • Bitch Slap: Played for Laughs. In one of her and Ranze's frequent quarrels, she delivers this to her, leaving a bright red handprint on her cheek. Ranze gives her one back. Cue an aghast Yoko crying.
  • Bully Turned Buddy: Eventually she has a realization that she's a Jerkass and strives towards gaining Ranze's respect. Ranze starts to see the good in her, and pulls her in her monster-hunting adventures, and the girls have each other's backs.
  • Butt-Monkey: Her bullying of Ranze always comes back to bite her as she's messing with a vampire with supernatural powers. Hell, when she acquires powers of her own, they cause her further embarassment and humiliation. The first time she finds out that Ranze and Shun are an item, she's transformed into a dog and runs away crying, unable to express her sadness because she isn't human.
  • Dub Name Change: Her name is Lisa Thompson in the Italian dub.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Because Ranze tipped her Berserk Button (becoming close to Shun), Yoko strives to make her school life as miserable as she can, but Ranze is hardly deterred and fights back.
  • Missing Mom: Yoko's mother died when she was young.
  • Shapeshifting: Yoko can turn into a dog. She considers this What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?.
  • Unlucky Childhood Friend: Yoko has liked Shun since childhood, but he deems her "out of the question". She is hurt, but respects his choice. Years later, she's let go of her immaturity and married someone else, and her and Ranze's daughters are good friends like their mothers.
  • Visual Pun: She's the Alpha Bitch, and later gains the ability to transform into a dog. Worth noting that she does become a nicer person later, so...
  • Yakuza Princess: Yoko is confident that she will succeed her yakuza-boss father after he retires.
    Kunihiko Takaba 

Kunihiko Takaba (鷹羽邦彦 たかば くにひこ)

A boy who attends the same school as Ranze.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: His attempts to date Ranze are always rejected.
  • Ascended Extra: You can actually count on one hand the number of times he appeared in the manga, whereas in the anime he's in Ranze's primary circle of friends. She even calls him "Kunihiko-kun".
  • Book Worm: The preppy nerd classmate at Ranze's school, Kunihiko Takaba (nicknamed "Shuusai", the Japanese equivalent of the trope) who has a crush on Ranze and spends most of his time on books and dislikes athletics on principle.
  • Epic Fail: He once challenged Shun to a race over Ranze's heart. He came last place.
  • Flanderization: In the manga, he was a Flat Character with a few appearances, but in the anime he is close friends with Ranze, and secretly desires to be more than that.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Shuusai" (bookworm).

Narumi Ichihasi (市橋なるみ, いちはし なるみ)

A friend of Rinze's. Her birthday is March 1, 1977. She is the protagonist of Part 2.

  • Contrasting Sequel Protagonist: In contrast to Ranze, the plucky, free-spirited protagonist of Part 1, Narumi is a demure Nice Girl who doesn't have much agency and control over her circumstances, but still does what she can to show up and protect her loved ones.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She lost her mother at a young age, and is implied to have inherited her dangerous heart condition. She was on the verge of death when she met Ranze and Rinze, who decided to make a deal to spare her life.
  • Dude Magnet: Her classmates Kota and Ichiro have feelings for her, but daren't approach her because of Rinze.
  • Everyone Can See It: Maybe it's because of her delicate constitution, but all of her and Rinze's mutual friends can see that she has a crush on him.
  • Flat-Earth Atheist: Doesn't believe in aliens. This is despite her boyfriend Rinze being a werewolf and his sister Ranze being a vampire.
  • Ill Girl: When she meets Rinze, she confesses to him that she has an upcoming heart surgery and is terrified of dying. Rinze assures her to be brave and go through it anyway, and after this she falls for him.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother died when she was young, so she lives with her father and grandma. Shockingly, Narumi herself is close to becoming this as an adult when her heart disease returns, but luckily she pulls through.
  • Nice Girl: She's as sweet as sugar despite her hard life.
  • The Power of Love: During the war between the white fairies and the black fairies, Rinze lost his memories after he was put under a spell from the opposing side. Narumi is distressed and stays by his side, even as he declares that he is to marry Coco. It is thabks to her love that he suddenly remembers that he is Rinze Eto, breaks off his engagement, and marries her instead.
  • Secret-Keeper: Rinze's identity as a werewolf is found out when the Psychic Research Institute note that he mysteriously failed to show up in the photographs they took, despite ordinary humans appearing in them. Wanting to preserve his identity, Rinze tampers with all their memories to forget him, except Narumi, who he trusts.
  • Victorious Childhood Friend: Narumi spends years pining for Rinze and eventually gets with him, forming the series' Beta Couple.
  • Was Once a Man: After drinking the flower tea at Ranze and Shun's wedding, she develops supernatural powers - specifically a dual personality, with a darker alter ego.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: Ranze and Rinze learn that she's slated to die this year, and her condition is fatal.
    Futaba Anzui 

Futaba Anzui (安西二葉, あんざい ふたば)

A beautiful young student who's also an Idol Singer. She was born on July 20, 1976.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: She has a crush on Rinze, but he's made up his mind about Narumi being the one for him.
  • Ambiguously Human: Futaba is widely believed to be an alien, not a human being, with many newspapers and tabloids reporting such.
  • Idol Singer: She's a skilled Idol Singer, which causes her to have a bit of a complex towards the other students.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She has pale skin and beautiful, dark tresses of hair.
  • Second Love: She is Kota's - he initially liked Narumi, but Narumi liked Rinze, so he turned his attention to her instead.

    Kota Aoyagi 

Kota Aoyagi (青柳幸太, あおやぎ こうた)

Voiced by: Manga only character

Rinze's best friend, and Narumi's childhood friend. His birthday is May 5, 1976.
  • All Men Are Perverts: While he's at the Eto's household, he lifts Ranze's skirt, and gets screamed at for it.
  • Happily Married: While he had a crush on Narumi at first, he soon fell for Futaba, and they're married in the future. From then onwards, he continues to support her career.
  • Tsundere: He's a diehard fan of Futaba's music, but too bashful to say it.
  • Unlucky Childhood Friend: To Narumi, who he had known since childhood. It pained him to see her swoon over Rinze, but he accepted it
