** From the same chapter, Iida gives his reasons for why he doesn't want to [[spoiler:go rushing off to save Bakugou]]. He's frustrated as the class president, but he's terrified of his classmates making the same mistake he did. He even specifically mentions that seeing Deku in the hospital reminded him of his brother.

** The next chapter is even worse. We see the results of the fighting that took place. One of the pussycats is in critical condition, and another is missing. Multiple students are in critical condition from injuries and poison, and most of the class is not only divided on how they should handle what's just happened, but also completely defeated by it. Not helping is the fact that now Deku is torn between wanting to help rescue Bakugou, and knowing that it's something he should stay out of from experience.

* The end of Chapter 82. The League of Villains manages to [[spoiler: take Bakugou]], much to Izuku's horror. What really sells it is that before he gets taken, Bakugou warns him to stop. Not with his usual arrogance and pride, but out of fear.

* Kouta's entire situation is like this. He ended up losing both his parents, only to hear from other heroes how incredible they were for dying in the line of duty, and now lives with his aunt and her team of heroes who help train kids to be heroes. He's surrounded by people who's careers remind him of his painful loss.

* Chapter 70 has Deku asking All Might if there were ever people he couldn't save, with All Might responding that of course there are always people he can't help just because they aren't nearby, and he has to [[StepfordSmiler force himself to smile]] in spite of there being so many people he can't help.

* Chapter 80 has Deku asking All Might if there were ever people he couldn't save, with All Might responding that of course there are always people he can't help just because they aren't nearby, and he has to [[StepfordSmiler force himself to smile]] in spite of there being so many people he can't help.

** It's heavily implied that for the successor to have the full power of "One for All", the previous user must die. That's the cost which Torino told All Might to tell Deku, but he can't bring himself to do it.

** In chapter 37, she plays off her loss as no big deal in front of Deku, but after she is alone she breaks down crying while on the phone with her dad telling him she's sorry she didn't do better, so she could get scouted and start earning money. Falls into HeartWarming when her dad says he's nothing but proud and how Uraraka has more chances to show the world her stuff.

** It's heavily implied that for sucsessor have full power of "One for All", the previous user must die. That's the cost which Torino told All Might tell Deku, but he can't bring himself to do it.

* Chapter 59: All Might tries to force himself to tell Deku that he won't be by Deku's side when he faces "All for One" and instead chickens out. You can tell by his dialogue alone that it's killing him to lie to his protege about his short lifespan.

** The followup chapter drives it home for both of them. Todoroki's hero name is just his first name, and same with Iida's. Despite Iida's older brother passing the torch of his hero name to him due to being permanently crippled, Iida can't bring himself to do it. Likewise, Todoroki is still hung up over his issues even after visiting his mom, or possibly partly because of it.

** Todoroki visiting his mother for the first time since she burned him.

* Chapter 44 has Iida seeing his brother in the hospital, and breaking down in tears as he hears him apologizing for having Iida see him defeated like that.

* Chapter 43: Todoroki and Bakugou clash in the finals. [[spoiler:Todoroki freezes up when he recalls the moment his mother scalded him, costing him the match, a victory that Bakugou finds hollow.]]

* Chapter 42: Iida learning from his mother that [[spoiler: his brother was attacked]]. What makes it worse is that he didn't plan on talking to him until he won the tournament ([[spoiler: which he didn't]]).

* Chapter 40 manages to be heartbreaking for Midoriya and All Might. All Might gets chewed out for causing Deku to strain himself so much that he can no longer be healed normally, requiring surgery. Midoriya, on the other hand, is on the verge of tears thinking he let All Might down by provoking Todoroki into his powerup, which caused him to lose with 3 severely broken limbs.

** At one point a young Shouto watches his older siblings happily play outside, right before he is dragged away by his father for more training.

* Chapter 39. We learn that Todoroki's mother [[spoiler: used to be very loving and encouraging towards him, until she snapped, even going so far as to call Endeavor out on being brutal towards Todoroki when he was only five]]. After [[spoiler: burning Todoroki, she was sent to a mental hospital]]. We then see where Todoroki truly started to hate his father by telling him it was his fault.

* Chapter 39. We learn that Todoroki's mother [[spoiler: used to be very loving towards him until she snapped, even going so far as to call Endeavor out on being brutal towards Todoroki when he was only five]]. After [[spoiler: burning Todoroki, she was sent to a mental hospital]]. We then where Todoroki truly started to hate his father by telling him it was his fault.

** Poor Momo looks so dejected after her loss.

** His quirk, unless he is using it in hero bussiness, to capture criminals or interrogating suspects, has no legal uses. So, basically, being a hero is the only way that he can use his talent.

* You have to have some sympathy for Shinsou in chapter 33. The explanation that plenty of strong and useful quirks can be overlooked by the entry exam makes you wonder how many kids have had their dreams crushed by the bad luck of not having something that can cause physical damage. A line from Aizawa, the super strict teacher prepared to expel any student he deemed too weak, even expresses sympathy in explaining how he's against the way the entry exam is structured for this very reason.

* Todoroki's backstory combines this with nightmare fuel. [[spoiler: His father forcefully married his mom in order to [[ChildByRape breed a child]] to be better than All Might. His scar is from the boiling water his mother threw at him cause she hated his father and the left side of his face reminded her too much of him. Endevour doesn't even refer to Todoroki as a person, calling him "[[ItIsDehumanizing it]]".]] Suddenly Todoroki's hatred of his father becomes very justified by what he did.
