The actual Legion began as a source of CannonFodder to fight in dangerous and distant lands without risking the lives of too many actual French citizens. However, tough training and years of campaigning in harsh environments turned it into an elite expeditionary force with infantry, armor, and airborne components. For a Legionnaire who completes five years of service or has been wounded in action, French citizenship is the reward (the latter option being known as becoming ''Français par le sang versé''--"French by spilled blood").

Because Atlas is modeled after Germany, Atlesian Legionaires are taught a language modeled after German instead of French.

The actual Legion existed to provide a body of CannonFodder who could fight in dangerous and distant lands without risking the lives of too many actual French citizens, though in recent years it took the role of a far smaller, elite infantry unit, complemented by a light armor regiment. French citizenship is often the reward for a Legionnaire who has completed five years of service or been wounded in action (the latter option being known as becoming ''Français par le sang versé''--"French by spilled blood").
