* ''Fanfic/DanganronpaMementoMori'': Protagonist Kaori doesn't want to be considered a hero, but rather just someone trying to survive the Killing Game. Daigo, the deuteragonist, instead openly desires to be a hero by ending the Killing Game, to the extent that [[MartyrWithoutACause he would die for his fellow students]], much to the approval of some and chagrin of others. [[spoiler:And Naoya, the antagonist, is so caught up in his own delusions of wanting to be a hero that [[EngineeredHeroics he'll create a crisis to live out his fantasies]], with Kaori ''and'' Daigo condemning him.]]

* In [[WesternAnimation/Ducktales2017 the 2017 reboot]]'s episode "[[Recap/Ducktales2017S2E16TheDuckKnightReturns The Duck Knight Returns!]]", Launchpad himself goes through a similar situation with [[NoCelebritiesWereHarmed Jim]] [[Creator/{{Jim Cummings|VoiceActor}} Starling]], the actor who played [[WesternAnimation/DarkwingDuck Darkwing]] [[ShowWithinAShow Duck]], who he enlists to help bring some of the old show's spirit to a DarkerAndEdgier movie reboot of the show. Turns out Starling, much like Courage, is an AttentionWhore [[ItsAllAboutMe who thinks about himself first and only]], actually ''likes'' the DarkerAndEdgier direction of the film, and only agreed to Launchpad's plan to get his star-making role back, while the actor playing the part of Darkwing for the movie, [[spoiler: [[AscendedFanboy Drake Mallard]]]], is a fan of the original series trying to [[TookTheBadFilmSeriously inspire kids with the role like the original show did with him]], [[spoiler: and goes on to [[{{Defictionalization}} become Darkwing Duck for real]] while Starling becomes [[BigBad Nega]][[EvilCounterpart duck]].]]

* The titular character of ''WesternAnimation/{{Hercules}}'' goes into training to become a "true hero" in hopes of restoring his godhood, which was taken from him as a baby, and rejoining his birth parents Zeus and Hera on Mount Olympus. After having become a superstar and beaten a ton of monsters, Hercules thinks he must have met the requirements. Reluctantly, Zeus tells Hercules that while his accomplishments are indeed impressive and worthy of praise, these are not enough. It is not until Herc [[HeroicSacrifice sacrifices himself]] to save the woman he loves from Hades are the requirements fulfilled. When he reaches Mount Olympus, Zeus says that the measure of a hero is not the strength of his arm, but the strength of his heart.

* ''VideoGame/Fallout3'': If the player at the end of the game refuses to enter Project Purity's irradiated control room and instead sends the Brotherhood of Steel's Sentinel Sarah Lyons into the purifier, the narrator during the follow ending cutscene would remark how when the Lone Wanderer when faced with possibility of making the ultimate sacrifice, refused to follow in their father's example and decided instead to let a "true hero" sacrifice her life for the future of mankind. [[note]] If the Broken Steel add on is installed, the player would have the option of sending one of their radiation resistant followers instead of Sarah, namely Fawkes (a Super Mutant), Charon (a Ghoul) and Sergeant RL-3 (a Mr Gutsy combat robot), all three of them would also be similarly referred to as "true heroes" during the cutscene, even (bizarrely) RL-3 which is odd considering that a morally neutral machine who's only will is whatever his owner asks of him and is at no risk whatsoever of experiencing any sort of poisoning. If the player or any of the three followers activates the purifier they would be alive when the game continues beyond the original ending, though Sarah would still die if she gets sent. [[/note]]

* ''Franchise/CompilationOfFinalFantasyVII'': What makes a true hero is often scrutinized across the compilation, not without cause as the overarching BigBad is the FallenHero Sephiroth, who was once the main protagonist Cloud's idol. Cloud's skewed perspective on what is a hero takes on so much of his life and self-worth that [[spoiler:after years of trauma and scientific experimentation]] he believes himself to be an elite Ex-Soldier [[spoiler:only to realize he never made Soldier. However, it turns out that the humble person he actually is the real being that Sephiroth fears and was defeated by. Only by accepting his weakness and his failings does he become a true hero who stops Sephiroth once again]].

* When Team WebAnimation/{{RWBY}} goes on an expedition with Professor Oobleck, Weiss, Blake and Yang wonder why they received {{Armor Piercing Question}}s on why they chose to become Huntresses when Ruby hasn't. Upon reflecting on their own motives for signing up (Weiss and Blake did so in misguided efforts to find personal justice, Yang was in it for the thrills), they realize that Ruby was the only one of them to have the right motivation: [[WeHelpTheHelpless a desire to fight for those in need.]]
