** Probably the dominating thought in every rebel's head when the [=AT-ACTs=] join the ground battle for Scarif. Baze gets another one seconds later after he fires a missile at the closest walker, smashing its head sideways... and that's it. The thing takes a moment like it's trying to figure out if that just really happened, then "looks" directly at Baze with what feels like a promise of "You are so dead!" Fortunately for him, that's when Blue Squadron shows up.

* DeathByIrony: Krennic oversaw construction of the Death Star and its superlaser superlaser, and was quite eager to see it in action. In the end, he gets vaporized by them.

** The climatic battle has three Rebel fighter squadrons taking part, namely Red, Gold and Blue Squads. Seeing how only Red and Gold Squads took part in the attack on the Death Star, you can probably guess that Blue Squad are going to be wiped out in this film.

* ContrastingSequelAntagonist: Or prequel antagonist. Krennic is different from Vader and Tarkin both. He's a mostly competent character, but doesn't have the terror or brutal efficiency of the former or latter. He's just competent enough to build the Death Star, but not good enough to prevent a design flaw or the leak of said flaw to the rebels.

* DeathSeeker: After Chirrut dies and the Baze sees their shuttle explode, he knows there's no escape and he no longer has a reason to try with the death of his life partner (platonic or otherwise), so he calmly strides forth, taking out a squad of Deathtroopers, tanking a number of shots. He kills the last one, only to die as the last trooper had armed a grenade. He just looks at Chirrut as he waits to die.

* UsedFuture: While elite imperial troops and facilities are immaculate, this trope is in full effect for the rank and file, as with the guard on the prisoner transport Jynn is on after the ActionPrologue. Rebels and their facilities are naturally grimy because they're located in disused backwaters with no real support.

* HeWhoFightsMonsters: Cassian's arc through the movie is that he has become cruel in the face of the Empire's cruelty, and Jynn inspires him to return to idealism.

* RefugeInAudacity: The attack on Scarif is absurd in the extreme. Yes, the data cache is extremely valuable, which is why the Empire has a substantial garrison, including two Star Destroyers and huge squadron of TIE fighters, as well as elite troops on the surface. It would be next to impossible to physically remove all the data tapes before reinforcements arrived, and the size of the files ensure they could never be transmitted in time either. Thus, their effort actually works. The attack begins with a ridiculously small force that is able to infiltrate the station, but has no hope of achieving its goal. Until a rebel fleet unexpectedly arrives. The officers on the ground are absolutely stunned when Rogue One's diversion begins on the ground and Krennic has to scream at them to SCRAMBLE THE TROOPS. When the Rebel fleet arrives, the Star Destroyers respond with the same stunned disbelief, allowing a collection of light cruisers and a single heavy cruiser to take them down.

* ApocalypseHow: A Class 5 example. Despite the Death Star only shooting at minimum power, the superlaser targeting the Holy City of Jedha delivers a huge amount of energy, seeming to have penetrated the moon's crust and created a shockwave in its mantle, as the ground is shown peeling off the surface of the moon (which is what would happen if a planet was hit by a large enough impactor, and presumably a giant death laser as well). The moon probably isn't going to be habitable in the wake of such massive geological devastation.

Expanded Universe material confirms this resulted in a gradual Class 6 that resulted in the planet being nothing but a series of rocks by 4 ABY.
