* ProlongedPrologue: The first act of the film, like its inspiration, ''The Hidden Fortress'', follows R2 and 3P0, rather than introducing the hero right away.

* ThoseTwoGuys: The film provides us with two of the franchise's iconic duos: Han and Chewie, and R2 and 3P0.

* UsedFuture: The aesthetic of the film is deliberately gritty, reflecting a world in which the Empire has ground the galaxy down. R2-D2 is scuffed up, C-3P0 is what would happen if you left a brass figure unpolished for a year, Luke and his family live in a literal hole in the ground, and Obi-Wan (Ben) is introduced a tatty old bathrobe nearly worn through on the right shoulder.

* BatmanGambit: The team's escape from the Death Star was permitted by Vader and Tarkin so they could find the true location of the Rebel Alliance headquarters. It worked perfectly and justifies the ImperialStormtrooperMarksmanshipAcademy in this installment.

** The Lightsabers are built out of the tubes which hold flashbulbs from old cameras. When they're lit, the blade is actually a dowel attached to a motor that spins it, and it's covered with film screen sheeting (highly reflective, so the on-set lighting makes it glow for the camera), hence the blades basically disappear when pointed directly at the camera and don't provide the lighting we've come to expect from later entries to the franchise. The colors were added in post-production.

Added DiffLines:

* {{Flynning}}: The first lightsaber duel of the franchise is a slow fight between an old man and a dude who could bare see out of his helmet, but even so, they manage to only attack one another's sabers and Guinness does a slow spin. The low budget and fragility of the OffTheShelfFX lightsabers justify this, though.

* WeldTheLock: Luke shoots the control panel lock in order to keep the Stormtroopers from getting in. It turns out that the panel also controls the bridge. His makeshift lock doesn't hold for too long, either.
* WellExcuseMePrincess: Every interaction between Han and Leia is them snarking at each other.
