* DisproportionateRetribution: A frequent occurrence within the gang as any slight against them can and usually will be met with an enormous overreaction:
** In "The Gang Reignites the Rivalry", Dennis gets in a fight with a local frat boy resulting in him getting tased, so he and some of the others vandalize his house, set his yard on fire, and poison him and his friends (with Dee being collateral damage on the last one)
** In "[=PTSDee=]", after a stripper she slept with ashamedly admits that doing so was his rock bottom, Dee feels supremely insulted. She arranges for him to give a lap dance in nothing but a thong to a young woman on her birthday, ensuring both of their faces are obscured. Midway through the dance he realizes the young woman is his daughter. Dee claims she wanted him to know what rock bottom really felt like.
** "Charlie's Mom Has Cancer" has Frank convincing Dennis and Dee that their mom faked her death and hid some valuables away, sending them on a search that culminates in them digging up her supposed grave to find them. Her grave does indeed contain her rotting corpse, traumatizing them both, especially Dennis. His reason for all this? They both implied earlier that he was going senile.
** In "The High School Reunion Part 2: The Gang's Revenge", Dennis is insulted by one of the former "cool kids" who stole his prom date, and after his attempt to sleep with the man's current wife fails spectacularly, he furiously leads the gang out to his car to retrieve his "tools" (gloves, zip ties, and duct tape) so he can get revenge. Whatever he's planning doesn't come to fruition, but the imagination runs wild given the context.
** "The ANTI-Social Network" has the gang get shushed by a man at a bar when having one of their trademark public arguments. Dennis and Charlie both express umbrage at this the next day and spend the entire rest of the episode trying to identify and track down the man. He happens to come into Paddy's at the end of the episode, but we never get to see what happens to him, only having Dennis tell Charlie to "lock all the exits" before the credits roll.
** "Dee Sinks in a Bog": When Charlie finds his real dad in Ireland, Frank becomes jealous of them spending time together. He invites the two of them for dinner, serving stew with meatballs. Charlie, suspicious that only his dad's bowl has meatballs, makes Frank try one first, being proven right when Frank spits out the turd he was attempting to make Charlie's dad eat.

* SelectiveObliviousness: in "Frank Shoots Every Member of the Gang", Mac, Charlie, and their mothers visit Mac's uncle to get some old family letters because Mac is looking to feel connected to his roots. It becomes obvious that his uncle is not only gay (giving he and Mac something personal in common), but he dotes on him and all but states he would like to spend more time with him. Mac, someone who's always been desperate for parental approval, but previously rejected by his dad for his sexuality and constantly ignored by his mother, distractedly rebuffs his uncle's attempts at connection. Charlie, having a rare turn with the SanityBall, expresses increasing bafflement at Mac's repeated rejection of the very thing he's always been after, though without actually directly confronting him about it.[[note]]To really drive the joke home, Mac's uncle is played by the same actor as his dad, just with some makeup and hair dye to differentiate them.[[/note]]

* DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnMale: Deconstructed, as while the characters believe it, the narrative doesn't. Dee's brand of SerialRapist (browbeating men as a way of coercion) is seen as just as fucked up as her brother's, plus after the reveal that she sexually assaulted Charlie he doesn't want to be alone with her anymore. Also Dennis was raped by his high school librarian, with some kind of abuse from Barbara, and while he says repeatedly women can't rape men, both have clearly warped him terribly.

** Played straight and then subverted for Shelley, Charlie's estranged dad. After he dies Charlie tries his hardest to honor his memory and complete his arduous LastRequest for his remains, despite his complicated feelings about him. After it proves too difficult he has an angry crying rant at him for never being there. Charlie says he's glad he's dead because now he won't have to wait for him to show up anymore. He later tells the rest of the gang the guy was a deadbeat and he wants to forget about him and go home.

* ComedicWorkSeriousScene: This show is a BlackComedy centered around five UnsympatheticComedyProtagonist "friends" who are horrible people. However, the episode "[[Recap/ItsAlwaysSunnyInPhiladelphiaS13E10MacFindsHisPride Mac Finds His Pride]]" deals with Mac trying to find himself as a gay person and it's played very seriously. The episode ends with him finally coming out to his dad and performing an interpretive dance to express himself but is rejected. ** Dennis might get the most, mostly to do with him being a very dark depiction of someone broken by childhood sexual abuse; sadly telling Frank he has a massive god hole that he can only fill with sex, choking down tears as he mixes "cougars" up with "librarians", TryingNotToCry as he admits to the others he has emotions that hurt him, and multiple dreams where he either desexualises himself to get looked after or realizes his Implication/Systems were how he felt as a kid.

** Similarly, "[[Recap/ItsAlwaysSunnyInPhiladelphiaS15E08TheGangCarriesACorpse The Gang Carries a Corpse Up a Mountain]]" has some long-needed catharsis for Charlie's father issues, featuring him having a fairly moving breakdown over having been abandoned, only for the gang to show up (after themselves abandoning him earlier) and be uncharacteristically supportive of him as he performatively gets some closure on the issue.
