* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Happens multiple times with Dave, the EliteMook Boy tussles with whilst attempting to follow Glenn to the Culling. First, Boy stabs him in his shoulder with his own knife and tosses him aside. Then Dave gets back up and tries to blast Boy with his shotgun. Boy manages to dodge, wrestle the gun downwards, blast him in his own foot with it and then tosses him aside. Then Dave gets back up with the aid of some kind of pain-numbing aerosol drug, grabs a nearby hammer and tries to bash Boy's toes in with it to return the favour. Boy wrestles the hammer off him and uses it to break/dislocate his jaw before tossing him aside. Dave pops it back into place and tries another maniac charge on Boy, by which point he resorts to using a hydraulic vice to crush Dave's stabbed and broken arm in order to pin him in place so he can walk away. Dave then bodily ''rips his whole arm off'' to free himself, guaranteeing his demise from excessive blood loss, by which point Boy chooses to slice Dave's leg off just so his self-inflicted gushing wounds will do him in without further interference.

* ClosestThingWeGot: As Gideon complains to Boy at one point, the Van Der Koys have long since won the war and crushed all opposition, so the political enemies and dissidents who are the actual intended targets of the Culling simply don't exists any more, and they're having to make due with whatever they can scrape off the streets on Culling day, and even that is getting hard.

* ObviouslyEvil: The Van Der Koys have legions of FacelessMooks, enforce an EvilWearsBlack dress code alongside the SigilSpam of the Van Der Koy flower (although Melanie and Glen prefer RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver, possibly hinting towards her [[TheStarscream Starscream-like attitude]] towards Hilda), make liberal use of PublicExecution and a yearly RiggedSpectacleFight to eliminate "dissidents" (i.e. innocent people because there are no real dissidents left), and when they appear in public they make very little effort to hide their psychopathic, StupidEvil or EvilIsPetty tendencies from the populace.
