Venus Blood -RAGNAROK- is a sequel to Venus Blood -Frontier-, and part of a multi-work series created by Ninetail that combines adult Visual Novel and Strategy RPG mechanics. It was initially released in 2016 exclusively in Japan, though translation patches are available. On January 12, 2024, it was announced that -RAGNAROK- would be the next to get an International edition fundraising campaign, following Venus Blood -Gaia-. A Kickstarter fundraising campaign for this edition was launched on May 22, 2024, with expected fulfillment in November 2025.500 years ago, Loki conquered the continent of Yggdrasil, and founded the Asgard Empire with help from the Goddesses of the Four Seasons. But since then, Overlord Loki has disappeared, and the goddess Odin, who had been entrusted with ruling the Empire in his absence, has also died. Soon, the conflict between the gods and demons in the Empire became more serious, and they now fight for their own aspirations.
Born as a descendant of Loki and the goddess Tyrca, Vali was born with strong demon blood, and raised as a soldier with the aspiration of reuniting the realm. While being chased by his sister-in-law, Brunhilde, who has inherited Odin's role of guarding all of Valhalla, he met a boy with the same name as Loki, the overlord. The boy grants Vali the Heart of Yggdrasil, the same treasure Overlord Loki once used to conquer the land, and starts him on the path to reunite the land, either through unification or dominance...
This game includes the following Tropes:
- Ascended Extra: As with previous International Edition campaigns, significant support from Kickstarter backers would add up to three new scenes with major female characters, as well as up to two generic female combat units, the latter becoming Loki's personal bodyguards. All five potential "stretch goal" scenes would be decided by polls that "Asguardian Council"-tier contributors could participate in. Additionally, "Flower of the Battlefield"-tier backers (a minimum contribution of ¥327,800) could each request another battle-only unit to gain their own scene, and backers at the highest, limited-availability "Legacy of the Overlord" tier (a ¥1,200,000 contribution) could request a scene for a major character that also rewards a new variation of them for combat.
- Corrupt Church: The Imperial Senate erased Loki's legacy, attributing the current state of the world entirely to Odin, and enforced a Goddess-dominant worldview that led to the subjugation of modern demons.
- Distant Sequel: Five hundred years have passed since the events of Venus Blood -Frontier-.
- Fountain of Youth: The Loki of this game is the same as the Loki of Frontier, but looks notably younger than he used to despite 500 years passing.
- The Four Gods: In addition to Nanna taking up Odin's role, there are now four new Seasonal Goddesses: Flora, Fana, Ullr, and Brunhilde.
- Guest Fighter: As with previous International Edition campaigns, the fundraising campaign would lead to characters from Venus Blood titles appearing as battle-only units. Backers at the "Asguardian Council: Citizen" tier (a minimum contribution of ¥121,000) could request any one character of their choice to be added, with even higher tiers allowed to add up to four. Additionally, the campaign reaching stretch goals during fundraising would lead to up to eight more characters added, though these guests would be chosen by Ninetail instead of nominated by backers.
- Idol Singer: Ullr, the girl who has inherited Rigret's role as Winter Goddess (and named after a Norse god of winter), has set herself up as one in order to comfort and gain admiration from the people of her territory.
- In Name Only: Much like its predecessor, while the game uses names and terms from Norse Mythology, this is not a faithful adaptation of the source material.
- Late-Arrival Spoiler: Some key events from the climax of Frontier are spoiled by this game's premise, such as how the formerly Floating Continent of Yggdrasil fell into the ocean and split into new regions.
- Merging the Branches: In Frontier, the Harem ending was exclusive to the corruption-focused Conquest route. However, it's shown early on that Loki had offspring with both Tyrca (leading to Vali) and Odin (leading to Brunhilde and Vidar) in their uncorrupted forms, and the world's history better matches what occurs at the end of the Reign route, with any depiction of Loki as a tyrant being propaganda spread by the Imperial Senate.
- Multiple Endings: Like other Venus Blood games, including its predecessor Frontier, decisions made during war briefings and other events will determine whether Vali goes down a Law or Chaos route.
- Power at a Price: The game's main form of corruption is "Fimbulvetr Syndrome", in which a goddess repeatedly using their miraculous powers on the battlefield taints their spiritual essence.
- She Is All Grown Up: Jorm, the youngest of Overlord Loki's four cousins, fell into a deep slumber after his reign began. When she wakes up during this game's events, she is notably more mature, in both appearance and personality.
- Spin-Offspring: Vali is a descendant of Loki and Tyrca, and Brunhilde & Vidar are descendants of Loki and Odin.
- Stealth Prequel: While this game's connection to -Frontier- is obvious, one of the important side characters is Hermód El Baldr, the founder of the Baldr Empire from Venus Blood Empire.
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Many of the current goddesses share personality traits with their predecessors; for example, Fana is a warrior that hides her feminine side like Thor, while Ullr is known for her young innocence like Rigret.
- Verbal Tic: Ullr tends to end her statements with an "Urun ☆".
