Recap / The Raccoons S 5 E 13 "Go for Gold!"

Go To

Airdate: March 19, 1991

Cyril retires and Cedric takes over the family business. Sleazy con artist Robin Steel convinces him to organize a bogus race, in which Bert and Lisa compete.

Go for Gold! contains examples of:

  • Bill... Bill... Junk... Bill...: Lisa sorts through the mail this way before noticing the package containing the gold medal from the race that Bert sent her.
  • Call-Back: Lisa wears her old basketball clothes from "Moving In!" when preparing for and competing in the triathlon.
  • Defeating the Cheating Opponent: After Rod cheats by dropping some tacks in front of Lisa's bike, Bert wins the race fairly by catching up to him and passing him before he could try it again.
  • Door-Closes Ending: Though it's not entirely the focus of the shot, the episode (and the series) ends after Lisa goes inside her house with the gold medal from the race, closing the door behind her.
  • Foreshadowing: Bentley points out how small the ad for the triathlon is in the newspaper, hinting that Robin is lying about giving it a lot of promotion.
  • Immaturity Insult: When Bert chooses to quit the race because he can't beat Lisa during practice, Lisa tells him that he's acting like a child.
  • Invisible Advertising: In-Universe. Despite Robin promising to give the triathlon a lot of coverage, the only advertisement for it that's shown is an easy-to-miss ad in the newspaper and Robin brought a single film camera to cover the whole thing. Ralph discovers this is also true with the other triathlons Robin set up in the past.
  • Last Episode, New Character: Rod and Robin Steel serve as the main antagonists of what would become the last episode of the series.
  • Small Parent, Huge Child: Rod Steel is taller and more muscular than his father Robin.
