Recap / Sue Thomas FB Eye S 2 E 9 The Gambler

Go To

Levi begins acting bizarre, which the vet attributes to a medication reaction. A mixup with his sedative leads to Lucy getting a sour stomach and Levi going missing. Meanwhile, the FBI finally gets a chance to catch "Red" Moreno, a high-ranking criminal who happens to be a gambler. Bobby, a former gambling addict, ignores Jack's protests and goes undercover, and quickly begins showing his own brand of craziness.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Accidental Truth: While Sue is looking for Levi, she disturbs a homeless man. After yelling once that there's no Levi here, he explodes out of his hiding spot, startling her, and repeats the statement. Then he asks if she's deaf. Sue doesn't say anything except an apology, but the viewer knows he accidentally got it right.
  • Artistic License – Geography: When Lucy mentions animals acting bizarrely before an earthquake, Sue objects that DC is not known for earthquakes. However, though the area isn't as earthquake-prone as California, it has had some severe earthquakes in known history (including a 5.8 quake in 2011).
  • Brick Joke: Levi, acting out, pees on Myles' leg right before a meeting with the president. Luckily, the meeting has to be rescheduled. However, when Levi comes back, Myles says he's happy he returned, but, given that the meeting is now taking place that day, he would prefer for him to keep his distance.
  • Butt-Monkey: Myles, on his way to a meeting with the President of the United States, falls victim to Levi's crazy behavior and gets peed on. Luckily, the meeting has to be rescheduled, but the story spreads all through the FBI.
  • Descent into Addiction: Bobby starts out calm and cool, though confident that he could wipe the floor with everyone at the card table if he wanted. He gradually gets to the state that he maxes out three credit cards, has to borrow money from the FBI, and lies to Darcy and Jack about where he's been. By the end, he admits he still has a problem. He wins enough money to pay back the bureau and begins going to gamblers' anonymous. Jack also offers him a loan to help him survive while he pays back the credit card debt.
  • The Gambling Addict: Apparently, at some point before the start of the show, Bobby had a gambling addiction so strong that he lost his savings and his apartment. Bobby insists that that's in the past and he's the best person to handle the sting to get Moreno. However, he becomes addicted again over the course of the mission.
  • It's All My Fault: Lucy and Charlie both blame themselves for Levi going missing. Lucy claims that she started everything by mixing up her vitamin C and Levi's sedative, and Charlie says that he was supposed to be watching Levi when he escaped. Sue insists that neither of them should blame themselves.
  • Missed Him by That Much: Late in the episode, Sue is following a tip about a dog sighting by the docks. She calls for Levi, who was earlier shut behind a door by an oblivious man. Levi jumps up on the door and barks, but Sue is facing the other way and of course, can't hear him. He has to get himself to a fire escape before she notices him.
  • Overworked Sleep: After Sue stays awake for days looking for Levi, Jack convinces her to sit down on the couch. Despite alleging that she couldn't sleep, Sue is unconscious for the next two hours.
  • Secret-Keeper: Jack is the only person in the office who knows that Bobby had a gambling addiction so bad that he lost his apartment over it. He refuses to tell Garrett about the situation when Bobby volunteers to go undercover, knowing that the information would get Bobby fired, but he begs his friend not to go through with it.
  • Shout-Out: While reassuring Sue that they're going to find Levi, Myles calls him "Levi the Wonder Dog."
  • Trash Landing: Levi finally attracts Sue's attention by climbing out on a fire escape. She tries to tell him to stay, but he instead jumps into a dumpster below. Luckily, the landing is fairly cushy and non-gross.
  • Urine Trouble: Levi pees on Myles' leg, which serves as one of the spurs for Sue to take him to the vet.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Implied. Lucy becomes nauseated from the dog tranquilizer she accidentally took, and when they arrive at Charlie's, she bolts from the car, saying she needs to use his bathroom.
