"At the school, we weren't allowed to sing the songs of our people. It was forbidden. They only wanted us to sing new songs. Their songs, in English. We were made to feel bad about who we were, of the way our people did things. Your grandfather, he did not like that. He was proud of his family, he loved our traditions. So your grandpa, he said 'If I can't sing our songs, I just won't sing anymore. Ever.'"

Willow: When I went to say hi, Molly had this look like she wasn't sure if she was glad to see me. Then she asked if I had a fun flight, and I said "yes," but she just looked confused.
Willow's mom: Did you say yes, or did you just raise your eyebrows?
Willow: Hmm. I just raised my eyebrows.
Willow's mom: Not everyone speaks with their faces like we Yup'iks do. Molly probably didn't understand you were saying "yes" by raising your eyebrows.
Willow: Oh. I'll try to remember to use my words too. Tomorrow will be much better.

Trini: I can't?
Molly: This is a traditional dance.
Tooey: We have to do it exactly the way grandma taught me.
Trini: Oh. I'm really sorry.
Tooey: That's okay. You didn't know. It's just that grandma is trusting me to teach you and Molly the correct way.
Trini: Okay. I get it now. No spice. Let's do it again.
Tooey: Left hand up, then your right hand up. Sway left, sway right.
Trini: (kicks) Wait! That was an accident!
Tooey: That's okay. Let's just keep going. Hands forward, then raise them up. Higher!
Trini: Ahhh! didn't mean to do that with my hands! Can we stop? (music stops) I was practicing all last night and my body won't forget all that spice I put in.
