Go To

Basic Trope: Parents are seen as deserving deferential treatment; people who don't render this are called out for it.

  • Straight: Alice always shows respects to her parents. She listens to their advice, obeys their commands, always says "Yes sir/ma'am" to them, never talks back to them, and is willing to take care of them when they're old.
  • Exaggerated: Alice views her parents as gods and worships the ground they walk on regardless of the things they do to her, good or bad. She would even beat up anyone who even showed the slightest form of disrespect to them or their own parents.
  • Downplayed: Alice and her parents struggle to get along in general, but Alice does do what they ask and she respects doing her chores.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: Alice hates her parents, talks back to them, disobeys their commands, doesn't speak fondly of them to her friends, doesn't give them credit for raising her, and refuses to take care of them when they're old.
  • Subverted: Alice only does what her parents ask in order to survive her stressful household.
  • Double Subverted: But as it turns out, Alice's parents struggle even harder, which inspires Alice to get along with them better and help out more.
  • Parodied: Alice's parents are overly fun-loving and ask her to do silly tasks like "Eat all that cake!" Which Alice happily agrees to.
  • Zig-Zagged: Alice is a teenager, and constantly switches between actively listening to her parents, and being rebellious and finding her own path in life. This causes a lot of strife with her parents, but also a lot of respect from her parents.
  • Averted: ???
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: When Alice's friends ask her to hang out, she says she can't as she's helping her Mom deep clean the bathroom tonight. She then expresses excitement at her Dad seeing her latest test score.
  • Invoked: Alice's parents use this trope in hopes of making Alice less rebellious and disrespectful.
  • Exploited: Alice's parents feel they can treat Alice however they want and expect her to show them respect because they're her parents who gave her life. Thus, they'll use this trope against her whenever she questions their parenting.
  • Defied: Alice refuses to give her parents deferential treatment for whatever reason.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed:
"Alice, don't you think it's time you did your own thing?"
"My parents need me. This is who I am, and it's part of this family. I am expected to help out, because we're a unit. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to help my mother with dinner and then clean up the den."
