Tropes for the film:

  • Agent Scully: Sheriff Owens isn't quick to believe the stories about Corbis being a Satanic cult leader, let alone an evil sorcerer.
  • Alien Blood: The cultists bleed a pasty greenish-white ooze when shot.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: Anyone who's been indoctrinated into the cult either has these, or is suffering from Eye Scream.
  • Big Bad: Corbis, leader of the demonic cult that's threatening the Preston family.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Tom Preston, Mark Preston's older brother, saddles up and comes looking for the latter when he's abducted by Corbis and his followers.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Anyone who succumbs to temptation and joins the cult becomes indoctrinated to Corbis' evil whims.
  • Cut Phone Lines: The town's outside phone lines are cut.
  • Game Face: Corbis lets his mask of humanity slip twice — once when converting Mark Preston into one of his cultists, and once again in the climax. Both times, he appears as a demonic hybrid of human and goat.
  • Ghost Town: The cult that Corbis leads resides in one of these.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Corbis presents himself as a gregarious sort who'd give a traveler a drink of water, but it soon becomes clear that this is a condescending mask for a man who's sold his soul to Hell.
  • Hollywood Satanism: Corbis and his Satanic cultists are portrayed as a monstrous lot whose primary goal seems to be to corrupt as many souls as they can.
  • I'm Melting!: The climax shows the satanic cult melting due to the eponymous occurrence.
  • I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine: Shatner, Skerritt, and Prather previously worked together on Big Bad Mama.
  • Secret Circle of Secrets: The movie was advertised as giving the audience "the first real look into the world of Satanism". Despite the presence of several LARGE HAMS (including William Shatner and Ernest Borgnine), it has all the thrilling scares of cardboard box convention.
  • Soul Jar: In addition to being the source of Corbis' infernal powers, the titular Devil's Rain binds him and his followers to life — destroying it seals their doom.
  • Tagline: "Absolutely the most incredible ending of any motion picture".
  • You Said You Would Let Them Go: The Prestons' ancestors betrayed Corbis and his followers to witch hunters, hoping for mercy. They weren't granted any.
