** Earp actually never rose above Deputy Marshal in any place he served as lawman. In Tombstone, he wasn't even on the town payroll at the time of the famous Gunfight. His brother, Virgil, was acting City Marshal and temporarily deputized Wyatt and Doc Holliday. Wyatt did server as UnderSheriff, but several political issues, including the county splitting in half, cost him that job.
