One Piece

The anime did a good job, I think, of getting across that Lucci definitely IS very powerful, just... Mismatched against Luffy. But I still wonder how much Fifth Gear was necessary. But to be fair, Lucci did ask for it.

Chopper blocking Saturn's stab still has me in awe. That's the same stab that pierced Kuma's cyborg back, the same body that Pre-Timeskip Zoro couldn't even scratch with a Lion Song, the move that cut through Mr. 1's steel body. And Guard Point just blocked it like it was nothing. Guard Point Chopper is objectively more durable than Kuma.

And it's consistent, because he also used Guard Point to block a slap from Big Mom in Whole Cake Island. Big Mom's slaps hit hard, she hit Luffy with one and Luffy blocked it with Ryuo and it still sent him flying. Hyogoro commented that the fact they were both conscious afterward is proof that Luffy did successfully use Ryuo to block it, even if it sent them flying. Guard Point Chopper is also more durable than Ryuo Luffy.

It's just crazy that Guard Point is so much more effective now. Pre-Timeskip, Chopper only used Guard Point in combat 3 times. Once to successfully block Kuromarimo's hammer, and then it failed twice against Gedatsu's Jet Punch and Kumadori's Shishi Kabob. Pre-Timeskip, Oda mostly used Guard Point as a way to show off how strong his opponents are. It was arguably his most useless transformation overall, since it failed at its one role: blocking.

But now, we've seen Chopper block hits with Guard Point that would have hurt Monster Point. Post-Timeskip Guard Point may look ridiculous, but it's damn effective. Chopper, over the timeskip, turned Guard Point from arguably his worst transformation to arguably his best.

I'm not getting my hopes up again, just supposing here, but this'd be like the third great time for Chopper and Nami to explicitly tap into Haki.

I'm not expecting all the Straw Hats to become experts in Haki by the end of the story. But I do kind of want to see them all have tapped into it by then.

Now here's the question, can guard point guard one of Whitebeard's attacks.

Guard Point guarding BLACKBEARDS attack would be such an awesome moment for Chopper.

I'm a little mad no one acknowledges the fact that Chopper is in fact, strong as hell.

While he can't technically defeat the biggest ones on the block, Monster Point has managed to go toe to toe with Queen, a mechanically modified Ancient Zoan user. And the fact that he managed to cure his Ice Oni virus which deserted many Waiters from the beast pirates to his side is still ike, one of the key moves for the alliance's victory.

Chopper's awesome moments aren't always battle related. Along with the ice oni virus he determines the Oars battle by performing an autopsy mid-fight and providing advice that made Oars vulnerable to Luffy's last attack

I agree to this, but I would rephrase it. ALMOST NEVER are his awesome moments about fighting and or strenght.

This arc has been subtly showing how strong the non-monster trio Straw Hats are. Chopper blocked Saturn's strike. Franky one shot a vice admiral. Nami and Ussop have been playing chicken with every enemy so far and have yet to be harmed. It's pretty impressive, honestly.

Here's the current version of my personal tier list:

Watched part of the new set of dubbed episodes on streaming. I stopped for now when Luffy goes Fourth Gear against Kaido - Taking a break.

Everyone did fantastic in these episodes, though. David Sorbolov did a hilarious job as Drunk Kaido. Chris Sabat is as awesome as ever in action for the final battle with King. Pam Daugherty does fantastic as an increasingly pissed off Big Mom. But then also plays Big Mom lamenting as she falls really wonderfully as well. (I also looked up Rocks-Pirates Big Mom's VA from Kaido's imagine spot, and its apparently Morgan Garrett (IF the One Piece wiki is correct). Her past One Piece roles include Kid Sabo and Tyrannosaurus.. That is, Iceberg's pet mouse! I didn't know her by name, but looking at the Wikipedia page for her, she's actually been tons of characters I'm familiar with in other anime too).

Speaking of Big Mom, even though the dub acting in these episodes as as superb as always, I do have one minor nitpick. In the big showcase Kid and Law vs. Big Mom episode, it was a bit of a question how the dub track was gonna manage matching to Big Mom's final line which was excruciatingly well animated... And I kind of feel like they barely even tried. I feel like the dub track goes Hong Kong Dub for a second there. I don't blame anyone for it though, it would've been hell to come up with something that keeps the spirit of the line intact and matches the flaps well enough.

As an aside, I'm a little worried about the amount of episodes left after this batch. Is the next one just gonna be the longest batch ever to get us to the end of Wano? Or is Crunchyroll gonna do a dumb thing and make two teeny tiny batches? I dunno, their structuring for One Piece volumes is just really weird sometimes.

That line from Big Mom was done by a Disney animator, the first time in history that a Western film animator has ever done an animation cut on a Japanese tv show.

Yeah, I know. I got a little over elaborate with my prose their I think; No shade to the animation job. Just pointing out it made this job more difficult.

I wasn't arguing, I was just reveling in how amazing that animation cut is, both as far as pure animation goes and the feat that it took to accomplish it.

I really love that they got a Disney animator to do a big cut for Big Mom's defeat. She really looked like a Disney or Ghibli witch in that shot, and it fit her perfectly.

But yeah, the trade-off for such expressive and gorgeous character animation and lip flaps is that it would make it really hard to dub over.

OK, question: whenever I see the subject of “worst possible ending for OP” come up, there’s always someone who mentions the idea of Zoro being the final villain, having helped raise Luffy to Pirate King solely so he could kill him and claim the title of the world’s greatest bounty hunter.

My question is, is this scenario based on something that actually happened in another work? It’s so bizarrely specific and yet someone always brings it up, right beside more generic possibilities like “the WG executes Luffy” or “the treasure was friendship”?

Feels like a joke answer, or a Crack Fic. If the criteria is "possible endings" well... I don't see that as possible.

Zoro never even cared about being a bounty hunter anyway, he explicitly mentions that the only reason he was doing it was to make a living.

• sigh* I'm hopeless, I ordered another Robin figure. This time of her Egghead outfit. And I've already got another Robin figure on pre-order, so now that's two at once. Curse you Banpresto, for being an intersection between quality and affordability!

Does anybody know any good tropes to compare Koby and Shirahoshi? Fishysaur is against both Mirror Character and History Repeats being used to compare them, and because I don't want to edit war (I believe forums like this are protocol for avoiding an edit war, correct me if I'm wrong), I would like to ask others for their opinions on which tropes should compare them, or if Fishysaur was wrong and one of the aforementioned tropes fits. As for the comparisons between them:

• The big one, which I really do think should be mentioned in some way, is that upon first meeting both of them, Luffy directly tells both of them "I don't like you", but manages to befriend both of them anyways.
• Both are Luffy's most prominent allies for what I like to call the "starting arcs", as Koby is the closest ally in the very first arc while Shirahoshi is the closest ally in the first arc after the timeskip.
• Both start off as crybabies and cowards. Both also grow out of that shell after meeting Luffy, although Koby moreso.
• Both were freed from major predicaments upon meeting Luffy, Koby from Alvida and Shirahoshi from Vander Decken IX.
• Both have pink hair.

By the way, that merch spoiler doesn't necessarily mean we'll be out of Egghead by then. I mean, I do think so, since it seems like Egghead is coming to a close, but it doesn't necessarily mean that. It could just be merch for the Giant Warrior Pirates currently on Egghead.

Everytime i assume "damn Egghead is good, hope it doesn't overstay it's welcome" it throws another peak moment for me to say "you know what maybe stay for a little more".

I do hope it ends before August though.

Remember when everyone thought Egghead was going to be a small lore-dump arc? Or a little later, when everyone thought Luffy vs Lucci or Luffy vs Kizaru was going to be the main fight of the arc and then it ends shortly after?

And now it's become ridiculously huge-scale, fighting all 5 Elders with the whole world watching an announcement about the truth of the world.

And you know, I kinda predicted that Egghead would be a bigger arc, based on the Parallels theory. This was the pattern:

• Return to Sabaody/Fishman Island: East Blue/Arlong Park

• Punk Hazard: Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, Drum Island

• Dressrosa: Alabasta

• Zou: Jaya

• Whole Cake Island: Skypiea

• Reverie: Long Ring Long Land

• Wano: Water Seven

• Onigashima: Enies Lobby

By that pattern, Egghead didn't make sense to be Sabaody, despite all the similarities. I said when this arc was starting that based on that pattern, it would make more sense for Egghead to parallel Thriller Bark. But everyone (including myself) had doubts that Oda would actually stretch out this arc that far. And now we're fighting giant scary monsters.

Based on that pattern, Elbaf might actually be a shorter arc paralleling Sabaody. And then Laugh Tale parallels Amazon Lily and the Final War parallels Impel Down and Marineford.
