i just don't get why the anime community hated this show so much when they liked Tonikawa so much. admittedly, the first two episodes aren't the best introduction to the series, but it improves dramatically after episode 3

You can add "Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten" and "Kubo Wont Let Me be Invsible".

My running theory based on a redditor who LITERALLY worships Ishigami from Kaguya as a God of is the sheer lack of pandering, wish-fulfilment, and self-insertion. For all his bad luck, Izumi is...a nice good kid who actually gets along with his classmates and isn't shunned or ostracized by them and has a cute girlfriend as well as him being more "soft" as well as outgoing. Think about the two aforementioned anime and Ishigami and how they're perceived by the community as well as how large swathes of the community views itself in general. To put it simply, it's because he's NOT a friendless mob character that they can live out a pseudo-intellectual persecution complex who learns to open up and love due to the power of a cute girl who is inexplicably attracted to him. The fandom can "relate" to those characters, but not one who already has a friend group and is fairly outgoing with a girlfriend.

Edit: Faraway Paladin and Taisho Otome had similar issues as well, though not to this extent.

that seems to track, Hachiman was also perceived similarly, though it seems like people are finally realizing that his positions and opinions weren't meant to be admired. the persecution complex's that weebs have is really annoying, as they, more often than not, end up ignoring the message of the work

The author, Maki Keigo, just posted on their twitter the manuscript for the final chapter. So yeah, it's ending.

It's apparently a sequel or something based on what's written or was that fan posting something else? In any case, very depressing low note since this guarantees there's no second season leaving pretty much all of the fan favorite chapters un-animated and the series effective Di W in the west which is what hurts the most.

[up]that's just some fan making a joke. As always, the know-nothings of reddit immediately take it without a grain of salt and don't even bother to confirm who's posting. The only thing Maki posted was the manuscript. This is why people need to stop thinking that using MTL means the same as being fluent in a language. Sadly, western anime fandom runs high with smugness these days.

It's more the sheer suddenness as well as the amount of further character development that could have been done or a potential second season. This pretty confirms the series as the dead lowest ranked modern romcom which is incredibly sad since it was such an amazingly good and wholesome one and arguable better in some regards than it's contemporaries. I hate the terms copium but that's pretty much what's going on since now the series is never getting anything resembling good press here in the west. It's just a depressing sour note all around.

How did the anime go over in Japan? Did they have such a lukewarm response to it?

It SEEMED to have done well since it gave the manga a decent bump in sales and there were some art events as well as the whole Akihabra takeover thing. But as far as general presence it pretty much comes off as nonexistent at least as I perceive it(lots of fanart gets posted on the reddit, but that's true of any series) compared to the other romcoms.

Awww, people hated it? Really? That's a shame, I thought it was very charming.

It's not my favorite anime romcom in the last few years (because Komi-san exists), but it's up there. I came in because my conspiracy nerd brain was sure there was something up with Izumi's luck and Shikimori's fervor in protecting him, and the rest of me stayed when I realized it was just a super-wholesome series.

Where were you? The series got a TON of shit for it's entire run that it was a MASSIVE UPSET that the series got Best Girl and Best Ship on an anime tracker website. It's led to a lot of review bombing at times.

Oh, it was just shipping bullshit? Never mind, then.

Kind of, kind of not. People were hating on it BEFORE it won those. Mostly a lot gross toxicity towards Izumi* and just general hate. There was this whole thing of the series being overhyped, but it really doesn't track since a lot of the pre-release stuff was just the usual stuff(character art from the anime and whatnot). This isn't to say there wasn't shipping war BS and that brand of toxicity(often egged by the anituber community in some way).

  • the irony is that a lot if the things they hate are things you can pin on to several other characters most notably Gojo from M Du D.

The anime has been nominated for Best Romance in the Anime Awards!

Nice gesture that ultimately feels pointless since it's not going to win or really do anything to curb the hatewave(if anything it'll revive it).

So, I watched a bit of this anime, and I’m sad that it got so much hate despite this series being fairly light-hearted.

If I were to guess, I think Izumi gets hated out of Psychological Projection, for being openly emotional and still having a group of friends without any sort of social backlash, kind of like why Izuku Midoriya also got his share of haters in MHA.

Agree on the projection and I'd even say it goes further as well again into that wish-fulfilment persecution complex thing that came up earlier with MA Bfan 11.

Yeah, using MDuD for comparison, the main difference between Gojo and Izumi for one is that Gojo has hobby is something that he's aware is seen as weird and he did lose his best friend in the past for that so that sort of people can fixiate on the "persecution" aspect of Gojo while forgetting that he's also a fairly kind and soft guy.

Izumi on the other hand is a kind guy with a lot of bad luck but who still has friends and an established relationship with Shikimori, there's no "conflict" per say beyond his bad luck and the daily antics he has with his girlfriend and friends.

Because there's no "persecution" aspect, those people can't attribute Izumi's relationships to some sort of karmic reward but have to process the fact that Izumi has his friends and girlfriend because of his own merits as a character.

In short, Izumi is a self-perceived This Loser Is You character by said weebs because he reminds them that sometimes rejection is not without justification. If you have a sour and dour personality, then it's no surprise that people won't like to talk to you.

Sometimes, the problem is indeed you.

Series ends next chapter

Every time I pull back and think that the Anime community isn't an AIDS fire of the worst people that every other Fandom has every right to disdain and DESERVEVINGLY, something happens that changes my mind to that. The comments on that tweet are that to me. The animanga Fandom in the west really is an amalgamation of the worst parts of ALL humanity and entertainment. I have nothing but disdain and loathing for it and would love to see it burn.

Venting takes the edge off, but sure. The Fandom is just that Berserk Button pushing in how terrible it is. But yeah you're right. I do hope we get a spinoff or continuation of the series of some kind since it feels kind of incomplete or like they could keep going with more stories about the group and other characters introduced.
