I know animators aren’t happy about this. The storyboarder for Glitch Techs flat out invited other animators and creative minds to show examples of pitches of theirs that would be better than this reboot.

I feel like the original was lightning in a bottle, and well, any association with John K. doesn’t help.

Yikes. Sounds like there's gonna be a lot of backlash against this.

I mean, it'd suck if the show is actually good (I remember enjoying Ren and Stimpy in my youth myself) only for it to sink due to people being angry other series got sidelined for it.

I can get that, but it'd still be a shame.

Now that I think about it, it would be better to do a Powdered Toast Man spinoff series. Lots of story potential (since the two PTM eps we got only scratched the surface), and it would be relevant to today since Superhero media is so prominent.

Who would be able to step into Gary Owens' shoes?

(For that matter, what about Jack Carter and Alan Young's?)

For Powdered Toast Man, Corey Burton voiced him in Nicktoons MLB . He could reprise the role.

I admit, even with the backlash of Cans Without Labels, I wanted a George Liquor spin off to finally get greenlit or at least make some reappearances in Ren and Stimpy Show. Of course George is far more tightly owned by John K, so he's likely not coming back.

Take this with a grain of salt, and scroll down. According to Bob Camp, he heard the show might possibly be shelved.

This is news to me.

Bob was not involved, but he does know people at Viacom. He had to have heard it from somewhere. Still, I assume Thad Komorowski will confirm it at some point and we'll know whether it's true or not.

RE: Reboot getting shelved:

Huh. Didn't see that coming.

Then again, we're talking about a hypothetical reboot that A, no one was asking for, B, brought back really bad memories of realizing how big a monster John K was, C, whose announcement came way too soon since Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had its last episode around that time (unless Netflix gets involved and revives it), and D, incited the animation community to bombard Twitter with their original cartoon ideas with the hashtag "#BetterCartoon."

One could argue that they might've overreacted on that last one, but I can't exactly will myself to say that they weren't wrong. Our Corporate Overlords are relying on reboots WAAAY too often. What we REALLY need is new original quality stuff, not rehashes of what worked in the past.

EDIT: That said, I still want Clone High to come back so it can end PROPERLY, not be left hanging.

Again, I don't know if this is actually true. But if it is, I hope Nick takes up Bob Camp on his ideas for an R&S reboot. It'd be great, I can tell you that.

If you want to support new shows, why not support Lynne Naylor's new show when it comes out this fall? With her involved you know it'll be good.

It's called The Mighty Ones.

It says something that it took her this long to get a show, even though she's one of the most important women in animation.

Well, Viacom hasn't responded to the rumors of the reboot being shelved.

Maybe they've delayed the reboot to mid-2021.

Also, I thought you were talking about The Modifyers finally getting greenlit for a series.

According to Billy West , the show seems to still be happening. He mentions stuff like the pandemic delaying production.

I should note he never said he was going to be in it, the pandemic was going on long before the reboot was announced (and the industry's adapted to working from home by now), and they generally don't tell you if a project's been canceled unless you were involved.

If they decide to revive it, yes, but all things considered it isn't going anywhere for the time being.

This isn't a sign it's still going on.

Would they legally be able to remove John's name from the creator credits and just give Bob Camp all the credit? DC did it for years with Bill Finger not being credited as co-creator of Batman (ok, not the best example,,).

It's possible. When Chris Savino was fired from The Loud House and Michael Rubiner took over as showrunner, the latter was given a "developed by" credit for the spinoff series The Casagrandes , with no credit to the former. Hypothetically speaking, this Ren And Stimpy reboot could say "developed for television by Bob Camp" with no mention of John Kricfalusi.

It should be Bob Camp, Jim Smith and Lynne Naylor, all of whom developed the show with John.

But if they decide to take the reboot off the shelf, they should just hire Bob himself. He wants to do it; he's one of the few people from the original show who does. Give a legend a break.

[up] Viacom execs who want a quick buck from a dying medium, which is also why they're making 80 spin offs of Spongebob Squarepants and 50 spin offs of Star Trek. Wouldn't be surprised if they start doing South Park spin offs in a year or two.
