Splatoon

personally, i think the multiplayer is fine as is. fix the matchmaking a bit, update the stage designs, and that's all they really need to do.

buuuut i don't think they'll put that much effort into the single-player imo. Splatoon has a history of reusing what was already good. Octo Canyon in 2 was a redo of Octo Valley in 1, and Return of the Mammalians in 3 was a redo of Octo Expansion in 2's DLC, so, if anything, i'm expecting a Side Order rehash with a different skin to fit the tone better.

if they actually do something different and good, though, i'll be pleasantly surprised!

Oh, I'd love to see a more involved single-player mode. The question is just whether they'd commit the resources to create something that elaborate on top of also trying to upgrade the multiplayer.

The multiplayer of Splatoon is definitely its strongest point aside from maybe Side Order and OE, and it's what most people are playing it for. For an example of what it can look like with less hit-or-miss stage design, look up gameplay videos of Splatoon 2 sometime

Splatoon 3 really coulda been a contenda if they didn't decide to make most of the new stages S-blocks for reasons nobody is quite sure of Like, at least the flatness helps long-range weapons get clearer shots. Why do they all gotta be the same shape though

If Harmony is focused on in later content, I really hope they give her accurately portrayed autism traits. Many autistic fans headcanon her as one of us, and I'd like to see some real representation in a popular game.

Some people would argue Marina is Splatoon's autistic queen. Hand stuff that looks like stimming, hyperfixation on construction equipment (Acht says she once ranted about excavators to nobody for two straight hours), programming/music savant, artistically inclined, socially awkward

Harmony is also autistic though

okay so

i always rewatch the Splatfest performances of the idol groups because 1. the songs are bangers, and 2. i love watching their performances, i even try to learn the choreography sometimes

and the outdated models for Pearl and Marina show very, very much in their Splatfest performances in 3, which is weird???

like, i never noticed them in Side Order itself, but Marina just looks perpetually worried for some reason in We're So Back, and it's especially weird considering she never looked this way in Color Pulse, either in 2 or 3. like what happened???

but in other news, here's my rankings of the Day 1 and Day 2 songs:

1. Tomorrow's Nostalgia Today (banger actually)
2. Color Pulse 2024 (never understood the hate for this one)
3. City of Color 2023 (go OFF actually)
4. We're So Back (good but not better than Color Pulse imo)
5. Anarchy Rainbow (overrated, but i enjoy it)
6. Anarchy Poisons (every mix) (it's booooring)

Marina doesn’t always look anxious? That’s my mental image of her

not permanently, like yeah she does look anxious a good portion of the time, but she does smile, she's literally smiling the entire time in Color Pulse, so it's just strange to me how she almost never does in We're So Back

What you're noticing, I think, is that they're using Marina's ":o" mouth for "ooh" sounds in the song instead of falling back on her ":D" mouth, and in still frames that can look like she's frowning. She smiles plenty during it though. Even if she didn't it wouldn't be out of character - Marina usually looks nervous

...I still don't know why Pearl and Marina are the only characters in Splatoon 3 who didn't get new models. They really start showing their age when you put them next to a character who does use updated models, like Acht... who is standing next to one or both of them for basically all of Side Order. If they were lower-priority because they were amiibo-exclusive for so long, why didn't that change when Side Order came out? You'd think 16 months would be plenty of time to design new models for them. Maybe they started in early development with the S2 models and just never thought to update them? Whatever, they still look good, and the animations are higher quality at least

it is really strange that they didn't get updated models though, gotta wonder why they didn't improve on them.
