Moana will journey alongside a new character, with their own goal and reason to fight whatever antagonist is in their way.
And then, just when they are about to finish their story, Maui will appear to take on the villain instead, while said new protagonist fights someone else.

X5: In retrospect, I suppose the reason this sequel announcement is a surprise is because it was hidden in plain sight the whole time. Elements of the original Disney+ series pitch announcement are being converted into a full-fleged film instead.
What worries me is that the movie is a pilot mini-series disguised as a movie.

I doubt it. It sounds like they switched gears mid production and retooled it. I think it’ll be self-contained.

That sort of news only reinforces the idea that this was maybe meant to be an animated series at first with cheaper voice artists.
