Yeah, Light just had the misfortune of picking up the Death Note during his moody phase. "Annoyed with everyone and disgusted with others" is kind of their MO.

Word of God is that Light would have gone on to lead a more or less normal (if successful) life without the Death Note. Presumably actually meeting people who could keep up with him intellectually or outright challenging him would have given him a much needed ego check and he would have grown up. Though that doesn't necessarily mean he wouldn't have gone into A God Am I mode if he didn't find a Death Note later in life.

It's entirely possible a more mature Light would have used a Death Note for more mundane (if still evil) personal gain as opposed to fulfilling delusions of godhood — Near did after all say he could at least understand someone using the Death Note for that.

I presume if he was more experienced then he would, at the very least, not try to use the precision assassination device for mass murder. That's not a moral judgment one way or the other, it's just a stupid way to use the tools at his disposal. I'm sure that a twenty-something with political opinions would be able to find high-profile people who could be quietly killed off. Even better, most politicians and mob bosses are old enough that a random heart attack wouldn't be all that surprising.

A thought on Light's psyche: he's able to pretty much accurately predict and scheme what his self without the memories of Kira would be like...and said version of Light is an actually good and heroic person. I've already mentioned how it brings into question if the Death Note is an actual More than Mind Control device, but it also makes me wonder if this means on some deep level Light might accept his Knight Templar ways might be wrong. Or else wouldn't he assume his Memory Gambit self would act almost exactly like he currently acts?

Nah, he just knew himself well enough to know that his amnesiac self would be driven to stop the new "Kira".

I know this is the anime threat but I saw the netflix movie and....I like it.

I mean is a terrible adaptation but I can get why it adapted in the first place and the mistake here: the focus too much on Light being a teenager when from most of the manga and anime, he barely seen like one, jumping pretty quickly too "GOD OF THIS WORLD".

I will said if someone could channel light energy would be a old school actor like gary oldman or antony hopkings. but that is just me.

'Death Note' Live-Action Series Being Developed by Duffer Brothers at Netflix

The Duffer Brothers, Matt and Ross, have recently announced their new production company called Upside Down Pictures. The new company's reveal has also come with the announcement of the upcoming project slate coming from the Stranger Things creators, one of which includes an all-new live-action television series adaptation of the renowned Japanese manga and anime series Death Note.

...so I actually gave the Netflix Death Note some points and hoped to see a sequel materialize, and somebody said "let's take the property we messed up the first time and make a live-action series out of it."

...

...why not.

Started reading a physical copy of Death Note vol 1 from Books-A-Million. Light's sanity slippage is a lot more prevalent in the manga.

The original manga is probably the second least flattering portrayal of Light Yagami.

One of the live action adaptations had a more explicitly villainous one who horrifies even Misa when he writes his own father's name in the Death Note. Or rather, what he thinks is the Death Note.

[up]The funny thing to me is that that version of Light got to die with a tiny bit more dignity than his manga counterpart despite explicitly trying to kill his own father.

Granted a large part of that is due to Soichiro still being alive and being there to hold Light in his last moments.

The 2006 live action is kinda both

Light is more sympathetic but he is also more deranged once he goes full KIRA GOD complex mode

frankly the live action movie is a good L route alternative 'where L wins' to hte Manga/Anime's Kira route Light wins let see what happens next

if you were never given a name, would you be immune to the death note? and if you change your name what name would you have to write to kill the person, the original one, the new one, or would either one work?

Well the rules state:

"The names you will see with the eye power of a god of death are the names needed to kill that person. You will be able to see the names even if that person isn't registered in the family registration."

Wich implies that every person will have true name with wich they can be killed no matter what. How exactly that is determened is unclear, but I would guess its what that specific person thinks, or will eventually think of as their true name.

Even someone who was never named would eventually call themselfs something.

And if somehow that doesn't click, then you die the second someone with a Death Note thinks of your face as the DN treats no input as your name.

[up][up] alright could the note work on non-humans like dolphins do tend to give each other names through their sonar and pets tend to be granted by the owners, and considering that they tend to respond when they hear it I guess they may understand it as it's identity in a way.

It could function on the old notion of the "true name," or it could be an associative kind of thing, as in the name, whatever it is, serves as a means by which the god of death can focus their power on a specific individual. The god of death associates a specific name with a specific person, and so can then use that name to effect them.

So...apparently a recent episode of the simpsons had an entire 8 minute parody of Death Note, even changing the art style completely

Pretty on-point, though one way the parody differs from canon Death Note is that the Death Note can't be used to kill a Shinigami in canon.
