Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

You know what'd be cool though? If the event of Ross turning into Red Hulk, is a long-term stew to get regular Hulk's attention, getting that arch enemy grudge match ignited.

As to Marvel slowing down, I can see an argument that it might help with oversight—and VFX crunch.

But speaking just as a viewer, and speaking only for myself, I think that such an output might feel a bit more manageable to consume, too.

Right now it feels like there's... a lot of Marvel content.

And... in some ways I'm glad of it! It means that there's likely to be something for a greater variety of audiences!

But it also means that the sheer amount of Marvel that one might want to look at feels a little bit overwhelming at times. ^^;

Oh well, maybe Fantastic Four will be good.

I know that I'm pretty excited for it—at least given how little I as-yet know about it. The poster—and especially that retro-sci-fi style that it had—was pretty enthusing. ^_^

Sending a military unit to take out a vigilante seems would be overkill ...

Not when the vigilante has the powers of Spider-Man.

Now, one could send another super... but then supers are harder to control.

... not to mention a waste of tax money.

Is that really unbelievable? :P

Apparently What If is gonna have a VR game hosted on Disney Plus specifically for Apple Pro Vision. Why I'm bringing it up because it stars Wong of all people.

Why is the MCU so adament on Wong being everywhere? Like, didnt Wong's actor break his ribs during MOM filming? Give him a rest on that. Wong might as well be the face of the MCU currently by how much they have him pop up

They really want him to be the new Coulson I guess.

[up][up] To be fair, voice acting and physical acting are very different things.

And while Wong showing up everywhere has the chance of getting annoying, so far he's been used pretty well, so I have no complaints. So long as they don't flanderize him like Korg.

[up] I think Jimmy Woo has a chance of becoming the next Coulson if Marvel plays their cards right.

Also, the franchise really benefits from having a Mission Control-sort of character who can just be kind of... present in many places, but not overpowering any of those places. That was Coulson's bit, as well.

The key is that they have to be compelling enough to not fade into the background, but also not be so much a protagonist that they're expected to star any story they're in.

Also, being cheaper to use than Benedict Cumberbatch helps.

One of the wackiest things I thought was real was that the Deadpool movies and Logan were censored on Disney Plus. Probably cause they dont cause the extra cuts of the film, but I remember seeing something a long time ago that said they were censored.

Anyone ever came across this and thought the same thing?

A big rumor flying around is that they’re courting Dwayne Johnson to play the X-Men villain Apocalypse. I… don’t see that working out well. The Rock has a “no-lose” clause in his contract that says he can’t lose fights in his movies, so this would likely make Apocalypse an invincible villain.

The Owl House and Coyote Vs Acme are my Roman Empire.

Hell, it was kinda shocking that he willingly signed on to paint himself losing in a battle to the freaking Undertaker with Wrestlemania XL... and even then, I'm pretty certain THAT was only because wrestling fans are just built different, and that there's no possible man on Earth who can be more unreasonable... than Vinnie Mac. (Though honestly, that was still a GLORIOUS moment all the same, enjoyed every single minute of it.)

But yeah, uh... MCU territory? That's a recipe for disaster waiting to happen... and the MCU kinda doesn't need recipes for disasters currently.

But counterpoint, the power hierarchy of the MCU is about to undergo a major change.

Also it would be so fucking funny to see Dwayne Johnson take over the MCU.

I can't imagine anyone looking at Black Adam and thinking that's what we need to revitalise the MCU.

Then again Johnson has long been used as 'franchise penicillin'... GI Joe, F&F, Jumanji.

You're right, I am NOWHERE NEAR as egotistical as Dwayne Johnson. I at least say half the shit I do for shits and giggles.

I think it's the fact that he became a freakishly popular superstar actor at all, that started getting that ego of his to swell.

Had The Rock's ego not gotten so huge, I could imagine him playing En Sabah Nur in both flashbacks while he was still a desert warrior (w/c will be funny if he as Apocalypse yells "Haku machente!") & wearing the Celestial Armor.

As for why The Rock couldn't get away w/ stealing Cody Rhodes' spotlight, the heat that the initial Rock vs Roman announcement generated was hotter than the Big Bang it threatened to ruin Wrestlemania before it even began. And while The Rock claims he decided to turn heel & return the main event spot to Cody, this is Pro Wrestling where kayfabe & reality tend to blur & wrestlers themselves are fond of self-serving tall tales both in order to boost themselves or to throw off the dirtsheets. It also helped that The Rock still won Night 1 of Wrestlemania so Cody can beat Roman in Night 2 and finish the story.

Uh I'd rather leave apocyplse for later. And use people like shadow king and Mr Sinister as the first main villains.

The Rock has a “no-lose” clause in his contract that says he can’t lose fights in his movies, so this would likely make Apocalypse an invincible villain.

If Tom Savini has taught us anything, it's that losing/dying in horrific ways in every film you're in is far more entertaining and memorable than watching somebody win all the time.

[up] It still amazes me how Simon Kinberg not only learned absolutely nothing from the failures of The Last Stand, but somehow managed to make an even worse movie than it. You know you've fucked up tremendously when even Iman Vellani refuses to watch something you've made.

Trust no one.
