Day 10: a rather infamous one...

Shark Tale is rather legendary in its reputation as DreamWorks's worst movie, or at least among the worst. And... yeah, it's not great. First, there's the elephant in the room: the character designs are god-awfully ugly. The fish all have the disturbingly humanlike faces of their actors plastered onto their bodies, and there's just something about the super-long fins working as arms and legs that's just... off, I don't really know how to explain it. Comparing it to Finding Nemo (as is common, this film basically being the Antz to its Bug's Life), Dory has certain facial features that subtly call to mind Ellen DeGeneres, but isn't simply Ellen's face copied and pasted onto a fish, heck, even staying on the topic of DW, Donkey has the same thing going where he subtly resembles Eddie Murphy but isn't an exact lookalike. The Nemo fish also work better because of their more realistic body shapes, with just enough stylization to make them expressive on a human level, as opposed to SharkTale's overly-exaggerated anthropomorphism. The sharks look better, though. The animation is rather inconsistent, I wouldn't say any of it is truly bad but a lot of the time it barely feels like they're actually underwater; again, comparing it to Nemo where they had things like dust particles, sunlight refraction, and subtle currents throughout to really sell the atmosphere, this movie barely does any of that, thus making it feel like there's just air surrounding them. The writing is not very good at all outside of a few individual moments; the jokes mostly fall flat, most of it being juvenile pop-culture stuff and grossout humor that doesn't handle it as well as Shrek does. The story is a Cliché Storm that doesn't really take advantage of the setting, it's the kind of movie you've seen plenty of times before with humans with very little actually changed. The characters are mostly underdeveloped, annoying, or, rather egregiously in the case of our lead Oscar, flat-out unlikable, with not even Will Smith's natural charisma being able to salvage him. He's rude, selfish, greedy, reckless, and doesn't really go through a satisfying arc to improve that, he just suddenly isn't at the end. There are three characters I actually liked, though; Martin Scorsese's pufferfish manager and the octopus voiced by... somebody from The Sopranos (never seen it, but my brother recognized him), both of which have most of the movie's better jokes, and Robert De Niro as the don shark, who he performs as a nicely intimidating but sympathetic antagonist. Jack Black and Angelina Jolie are alright too, I guess, given the rather underwhelming writing of their characters, they do the best with what they've got, and obviously DreamWorks did pick up on their potential later on... but we're not there quite yet. Would I consider SharkTale the absolute worst for the studio? Probably not, Joseph: King of Dreams was much more boring and cheap, this at least kept my attention with how offputting and weird it was. Still, its reputation is well-deserved. Thankfully, though, next time will be a nice pallet cleanser... because it's time to move it, move it.

Shark Tale is the perfect So Bad, It's Good movie for me. It's so off-putting in so many ways but I keep coming back to it. I at least watch it once a year just for kicks.

I unironically enjoy this movie and always have. This and Chicken Little fall into the category of "animated movies I love that everyone else hates"

I nostalgically enjoy this movie, very much knowing full well it's nowhere near that good, in fact I enjoy it in part because of the fact that it is a trainwreck of a film... that and, again, Oscar's bet on the seahorse failing, him getting shoved into a trunk, and having to deal with the shark, interesting stuff.

As far as bad films are concerned, this is at least one of those bad films where I'm still entertained.

Racist in the sense that they are stereotypical caricatures of Jamaican people, rather than having racist attitudes (i.e. Fantastic Racism toward fish). While I agree that the caricatures are kind of insulting, I found it at least visually creative that their tentacles resemble dreadlocks and their umbrella resembles a large knit hat.

Trust me, if I'm in the mood to watch an actually good early 2000's CGI animated film about fish, I'd do Finding Nemo. A movie, that doesn't have some really, really, really bad ideas for character designs.

I learned about existence of Shark Tale from the Polish magazine called Shrek and friends, that was basically focused on the 2000's Dreamworks films such as Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and Over the Hedge. This made me interested in seeing this movie, given this was another movie about animals that I didn't know about it (looks like I was furry even in my childhood) and I wanted to see if I will like it. And ironically, unlike the rest of you folks on the internet (including This Very Wiki) I honestly liked the movie, and it becomed one of my childhood movies. Maybe because when I watched it I didn't saw its flaws due to being too young to realize this (or being more concerned with the fact that sharks still eat fish despite everyone living ala. Zootopia style) or because Polish dub had voice cast more sympathetic and more funnier (Oscar is voiced by the same guy who voiced Sid in Ice Age) than original English version, plus making all jokes sound more funnier (this movie, alongside rest of the Dreamworks movies was translated by legendary Bartosz Wierzbięta who is the reason why Shrek became super popular in Poland). On a different note, my favorite song from the movie is a "Get It Together" by India.Arie (this song is one of the few reasons why I think Black women are natural at singing beautiful songs, with a voices like an angels), and which I imagine to be Angie's Image Song, due to appearing after her and Oscar's infamous argument.

And given that we are on the topic of this movie, I will share with all of you my headcanon concerning my most favourite character in the movie (next to Lenny), given that I don't where else to put it.

Namely, when I rewatched the movie after all this years in 2020 (maybe?) I started to see Angie as being Black-coded. And yes, I know that both in English and Polish dub she's voiced by a white person, but some characters in Lion King also are voiced by white actors in the English language version, despite the fact that most folks depict them as Africans when humanizing them. The reason for this is because Angie has big lips and a face shape that remind me of African descended women, and her Polish voice actress (Joanna Trzepiecińska) gives her "Black girl voice", and during the scene where Angie catches Oscar where he's sneaking to meet with Lenny and during their infamous argument scene Joanna makes her sound like a Sassy Black Woman. Plus, her interactions with Oscar before she discovers his lie remind me of Tiana's and Lottie friendship while her adorkable mannerisms remind me of Waris Dirie from Desert Flower. Not to mention that movie itself has big Black vibes due to its urban setting, songs that are mostly sung by African American singers and Ernie and Bernie being Jamaican, so having one of the main characters being Black-coded in that kinda setting is guaranteed in my opinion. I also think that she and Oscar could be a great representation of interracial couple (since I headcanon Oscar as white, due to his Polish voice actor Cezary Pazura, whose voice sounds different than Will Smith's voice) in a animated movie. Sticking to her humanization, I imagine her as a human appearing at Oscar party in his new house in a beautiful sparkling dress that nicely contrasts with her dark brown skin. Also, I have to mention my most favourite scene (or scenes) with her: scene when she and Oscar are at balcony and he's showing her the top of the reef and later when he goes to get a necklace he wants to give her, Angie breathes into her hand and goofily smells her own breath before Oscar appears behind her and she gets scared! Adorkable at its highest!

Day 11 brings us on a comedic journey to the wild!

I Iike to move it, move it! You like to move it, move it! We like to? MOVE IT!!!

A childhood favorite of mine, Madagascar may not be the most ambitious of the studio's library, but it's a fun, lighthearted comedy with charming characters and a good sense of humor. The film is much more driven by its jokes than a real overall storyline, coming off almost like a series of sketches loosely tied together by a plot of zoo animals getting stranded in the wild, but like I said, the jokes are mostly pretty good, maybe not a ton of absolutely laugh-out-loud hilarious stuff, but plenty to elicit a nice chuckle. The core cast are really the glue holding the whole thing together, not the most complex characters (yet, anyway), but with endearing and likable personalities and quirks. Alex the flamboyant showman blissfully unaware of his status as a carnivore, Marty the wisecracking Wide-Eyed Idealist inflicted with wanderlust, Gloria the Sassy Black Woman Team Mom, and Melman the worrisome hypochondriac form a nice group of leads... backed up by a truly excellent supporting cast. King Julien is a wonderfully kooky egotist convinced he's the single greatest thing on Earth with an excellently goofy voice provided by Sacha Baron Cohen, and the penguins... oh dear lord, the penguins. Hands down, some of the best comedic side characters in all of animation. They don't get too much screentime in the first movie, but they easily steal every single scene they're in, it's no wonder that not only did they get much more focus in the sequels, but eventually their own TV show and movie spinoffs, and they deserved every bit of it. The visuals, while a bit dated, are rather nice; both the urban environment of New York and the lush tropics of Madagascar look great, and the character movements are uniquely jerky and exaggerated for some nice physical comedy, looking almost like a 3D Looney Tunes cartoon. The character artstyle also has a nicely angular, geometric look to it, it's unique and nice to look at. Madagascar is a good movie, though its sequels have much more substance to them. Before we get there, though, it's back to Aardman with a film about their own iconic duo.

Yeah, Madagascar was doing the "cartoony movement" in CG before Spiderverse popularized it.

Madagascar was always my personal favorite DreamWorks production when I was a kid. It's still really enjoyable, and I think the franchise as a whole never really overstayed its welcome. (though I am curious on what the scrapped fourth film would have actually been about...)

The first Zany Cartoon in CGI is probably Scrat's antics in Ice Age, but that one was just limited to one character. Madagascar is probably the first attempt to do an entire movie in this style.

It's funny how Madagascar depicts the island as some sort of pristine tropical paradise. I was looking up its population statistics, and not only is it well populated, it actually has a greater population density than the US. That's kind of ironic.

[up] There's a theory that movie and All Hail King Julien takes place in a nature reserve, explaining why we don't see any humans in the movie or the show. And this reserve is probably very big, since all animal kingdoms that we see in AHKJ are located in it.

And BTW, I had recently created thread that focuses on the Madagascar series, so if anyone wants to talk about this series in general, feel free to join in.

[up][up]I don't really think the kids who grew up on Shrek and Kung Fu Panda are the same ones that grew up on Trolls. Heck, I haven't seen any of the Trolls stuff yet, but of course I'll be getting to them eventually.

Speaking of... "CHEESE!":

The second of DreamWorks's three partnerships with Aardman Animations, the last film they distributed independently, and the silver screen outing for Aardman's own iconic duo Wallace & Gromit. The beloved pair of an absentminded cheese-loving inventor and his intelligent yet silent dog is full of the usual distinctly British charm and humor from their short films, lovingly rendered in Aardman's painstaking claymation. The story is charmingly hilarious in its parody of classic Hammer Horror films, making the monster a vegetarian targeting a local gardening competition and having it be treated as Serious Business, with the duo's endearing personalities carrying along a series of great verbal and physical humor. The Egomaniac Hunter voiced by Ralph Fiennes is also great in his performance as the film's main antagonist, and the actual Were-Rabbit... well, the movie actually managed to pull one over on me regarding it that I didn't see coming, so hats off to them for that. I don't really think there's much more to say on this one; it's just Wallace and Gromit as their usual charming selves in a feature-length adventure, what's not to like? Next up, we go from the British countryside to the American suburbs...

[up] (5) One thing I hope that they will somehow include Madagascar in it (oh, how I miss my favourite penguin spy teamsad).

Also, do you guys know which caused Duloc to be abandoned in Scared Shrekless? While Isaac theorized that citizens of Duloc abandoned their own city, this Polish youtuber theorized that Farquaad's death gave the fairytale creatures the impetus to take revenge on the inhabitants of Duloc, which I think is a very dark Shrek universe theory (even more darker than theory that Fiona was cannibal who eat meat from the knights that Dragoness was giving her). But what do guys think about it?

Day 13: "I'm lost in the suburbs... and I can't tell which house is mine...

Over the Hedge is a movie that I guess you could consider an underappreciated gem in DreamWorks's library... not because people don't know about it or like it, but because it was a one-off movie and therefore didn't get the extended exposure that the likes of Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, and How to Train Your Dragon were able to achieve. The reason for this has to do with the lesser-known fact that the movie was actually based on a comic strip, so despite being a critical and commercial success, disagreements between the studio and the syndicate that owns the comic meant that they couldn't do anything more with the IP. I've read a little bit of the comic, and it's alright, but the movie is a very fun experience. The cast is very interesting and likable, performed by excellent comedic talent, and vastly expanded from the comic strip which only features RJ, Verne and Hammy. The environment of the suburbs makes for a fun setting for the movie as the woodland animals interact with human civilization and perform entertaining heists that ruthlessly parody modern consumerism, with plenty of great lines written with double meanings behind them to drive home the theme while still keeping them funny for kids. In fact, contrary to what you might expect, there's very little Product Placement in the movie (which I always weirdly forget, whenever I watch the movie I have a sort of Mandela Effect that they actually use names like Pringles or Doritos, before I realize that, no, they don't do any of that), which I can appreciate them sticking to the message like that. This also manages to pull off the rather cliche Liar Revealed plot off well, in particular making RJ's guilt develop gradually throughout the movie (intercut with some Your Television Hates You) in a way that makes him still feel sympathetic. This is just a great little movie with some strong comedy, and it really does suck that we couldn't get more of it. Next up, the final Aardman collaboration...
