Yeah, but if a character can't do any of the cool shit they're known for, then what's the point? Everybody agrees that Falcondorf is a disappointment, so why would you want other characters to suffer the same fate?

Imagine if Ganondorf had missed Melee but debuted in Brawl or Smash 4 with his magic and trident and Phantom Ganon and stuff like that. We'd all be in a better world.

Funnily, for as integral as it was to Ganon in the early days, Ganondorf's only ever fought as a wizard in his debut game. He still makes use of more esoteric magic and curses in his other mainline appearances (e.g. the Endless Night in Wind Waker), but during actual fights he's strictly an arms master that fights with brute strength.

It takes until Tears of the Kingdom for him to use something other than a weapon in combat again, and even then that's Gloom and not necessarily magic.

[up][up]TBH, I'd still be ambivalent at best to him. Unless that also came with him not being as fast as a glacier.

To play as them In Smash bros one of the biggest crossover games around.

Like you can say that being an Assist Trophy is fine but Dark Samus points to the fact that even the devs see the idea that being a clone is better than not being playable at all. And like man we got Daisy, Dark Samus, Chrom, Richter, and Ken out of this. All great inclusions that we wouldn’t have otherwise.

And Falcondorf has more to do with how Sakurai is weirdly insistent on not wanting to change him even when he’s willing to give bigger changes to more unique characters

If there's anything I've learned from being within the Smash fandom for the development cycles of two installments of the series it's that, at least for a significant amount of people, being able to play as a character does trump whether they're a Moveset Clone or not. You even see it with other games like NASB and MVS, too, to some extent.

Them adding Daisy in Ultimate actually made me pick up Peach's playstyle (which I previously wasn't that interested in) because Daisy is one of my favorite Mario characters.

[up]Same here. Daisy became one of my mains in Ultimate because, yes, she has the same moveset as Peach, but I care far more for Daisy as a character than I ever did for "I'm really your Mama?" Peach.

Falcondorf is a unique exception to the clone situation as they used another series as a model and, for the life of me that I can't figure out, will not fix it despite many games. The other echoes are based on characters in their series, so they can still pull from their source material. And Chrom shows they don't need to be 1 to 1.

Basically, I'm fine with character as echo as the potential entrance accessibility for unique newcomer is far narrower than the more welcoming echo entrance and gives similar characters a better chance to be added.

Of course, a factor is also WHO gets added as an echo, which is where the animosity towards Dark Pit and partly FE came from (as in, Dark Pit clearly didn't take time and resources away from a unique newcomer, but people preferred his echo status went to someone else).

Also the MVCI thing, the whole "functions" narrative was less about playing uniquely but more like weaseling out why a character wasn't included. It was a guy trying to say "well this function already exists!" rather than "this character plays uniquely".

I saw this on Twitter months ago and haven't stopped thinking about it: Dirk the Daring in Smash.

Never gonna happen, but yea or nay?

Only if Dirk has a QTE mechanic that kills the player instantly if they fail it.
