I am curious who took care of Naruto before he ended up in that apartment by himself. We know Konoha has an orphanage because it's important to Kabuto's backstory, but apparently Naruto never went there. To a lesser extent, it seems weird that Sasuke was never sent to a foster home and just allowed to live in the abandon home where is family was killed.

I've read this series recently, and One crossover I'd love to see that would never happen is with a series called Talesof Demons And Gods.

It's been reffered to as Chinese Naruto and has even been accused of outright plagarizing panels from the Naruto Manga (And Later Bleach after the Art Shift) and the Main leads love interest is literally if Hinata and Sakura merged, with the appearance and purple hair of Hinata and the Temper of Sakura (Albeit more subdued)

But it would be a cool crossover, especially since the power system of To DAG uses spirits for becoming more powerful akin the the Tailed Beasts, but with a giant vareity of creatures as opposed to just 9 (10 later)

Hence my earlier comment. Nobody in the entirety of Konoha looks good when you consider what Naruto's backstory actually means for every character.

Actually, no. OK sure the ADULTS come off awfully but the kids dont know. The only character I think is truly affected by this is Choza, for whom allowing Choji to hate Naruto seems AWFULLY out of character knowing his son was also bullied. Choji can be forgiven for not liking Naruto but not Choza.

But to this I have a simple solution. He just didnt hate Naruto and neither did Choji. Choji and Shikamaru just drifted apart from Naruto when he became a prankster and they thought he wasnt a good ninja and thus lost all their respect for him.

However, I cant make any mental gymnastics to redeem Hiruzen. His awfulness is WAY TOO IN your face to ignore like that, and I dont like the dolt like I do Choza and Choji. I loved his fight with Orochimaru and it was godtier though.

Naruto playing with Choji, Kiba and Shikamaru was only ever in anime flashbacks anyway.

The problem stems from Kishi wanting to keep Hiruzen's characterization of being a caring grandfather-figure, without reworking Naruto's shitty childhood. They just don't mesh well together.

I do have an, admittedly, elaborate head-canon/fan fic idea of the Sarutobi clan having taken in a group of orphans after Kurama's attack. It would've functioned as 1.) a cover story for why the ruling clan would take such an interest in one orphan. And 2.) it would've encouraged the other clans to do likewise through leading by example (we're one village; we're all in this together - all that jazz).

No doubt this version would've softened Naruto's upbringing quite a bit, but I can still see some room for angst. I'm sure Naruto would've been constantly reminded that he's not a Sarutobi; the other orphans could've shunned Naruto once they caught wind of who he really is.

I think it might more be on Jiraiya who was Naruto's godfather to have been responsible for him then Sarutobi to be honest. [lol]

It's definitely irresponsible of Jiraiya to not adopt Naruto. He was definitely first in line. But, once Sarutobi realized Jiraiya wasn't going to step up then it was his responsibility to do so.

I always headcanoned it as, like, cultural differences. Leaving kids to live on their own with some cursory overview from their neighbors is just normal to them. They don't see anything wrong with it because that's the way it's always been done.

I remember this one interesting reddit thread on the generational gap in Naruto. Whether Kishi intended it or it is just fans reaching, I still found it plausible enough.

Freshwater Since: Apr, 2023

Deliberate cultural differences would be an interesting idea for why Sasuke and Naruto were left alone for so long. In a ninja village where death is common, they probably expect children to grow up a lot faster and there is probably also an expectation that other clan members would step in if a parental figure or family was needed. It's just that for the main two, due to different reasons they never got that support network. Sasuke was basically left alone because his entire clan was gone. Meanwhile, Naruto was actively shunned because of the fox.

I still feel like Sarutobi should have realized that both of them were too isolated and stepped in at the very least to make sure they didn't go crazy given their level of importance if nothing else.

It's still crazy that Minato and Kushina had no family able or willing to take in Naruto and it does make me wonder who was taking care of Naruto during his early years before he could even live alone.

I believe in the novels and anime canon, Sarutobi took care of Naruto until he entered the academy which is when he recieved his own home and recieved a stipend and this is how the orphaned ninja students live until they can earn their own money on missions.

I wonder if the Uchiha area was left uninhabited. Must've been awkward either way for Sasuke.

[up]

Less awkward than having strangers move in and live in the houses of his loved ones while he still mourns them.

Besides, as the last Uchiha, Sasuke could be said to be the legal owner of all those houses

Though I am not sure how strong the concept ofย private propertyย is among ninjas.

I doubt it. In Chapter 1, Hiruzen also sics a bunch of ninja on Naruto for stealing the scroll. I think the tension between kind-hearted and tough-from-experience thing was always part of his character.

I mean, Hiruzen was fine with sending kids to their death in the Chunin Exam. He was never *that* soft.

But i also think the entire problem could easily be solved if Hiruzen just ensured some people regularly took care of him.

As much as I love Jiraiya if I think about it too hard both are awful for not adopting Naruto. So I just handwave this away.

I genuinely think Jiraiya would be a terrible father and he knew that. Jiraiya has frequently shirked certain responsibilities -like being Hokage - because he knew he'd be terrible at it.

It's also not clear he actually knew who Naruto was, given that his origins were obscured by Sarutobi. And given that he was away on spy missions and only infrequently visited Konoha, it's unlikely that he would figure it out anytime soon

I always headcanoned it as, like, cultural differences. Leaving kids to live on their own with some cursory overview from their neighbors is just normal to them.

Worth noting that in Naruto, it was normal to send kids to war to go die only a few generations ago. Meanwhile, children are entrusted with magic capable of killing people and prepared for warfare and murder as teenagers.

Kushina Uzumaki was pregnant for nine months. Shortly before her death, Minato told ย Jiraiya that he was going to name his son Naruto in honor of Jiraiya's character.

So when Jiraiya returns to the village and finds a blond orphab child named Naruto Uzumaki, feared for being the Nine Tales that killed the Fourth..it won't take long for him to deduce the child's parents.

And while Jiraya went on missions a lot of time, he did return regularly to the village; for example, he was present shortly after Oruchimaru's defection, which happened not long after the fourth's death.

..................

Not that I think it is fair to blame Jiraya or anybody else for not adopting Naruto

Poop there goes Jiraiya again. In his defense I think that he THOUGHT Sarutobi would take care of him and that Jiraiya REALLY didnt know Naruto. In that infamous scene where he said Naruto had a sexy body, he says "YOU ARE!!!" in big surprise and then said the infamous line to cover up himself up. Jiraiya probably didnt know how Naruto looked and didnt know he was the annoying kid who begged him to train him was Naruto Uzumaki.

TBH i do think its kind of weird to attach this much value to Jiraiya not adopting Naruto (which, again, is far from ideal as Jiraiya's job and proclivities make him a terrible role model) and not like, judging Jiraiya from being a huge creep and potential pedophile
