Should I add JAWTV to Angel Bunny from MLP Friendship is Magic? Contrary to popular belief Angel is not The Scrappy or even a Hate Sink however people hate him solely for abusing Fluttershy in a handful of episodes and wish death on him compared to Chrysalis and Cozy Glow who are irredeemable villains (Hate Sinks).

Could you write up a test example to see what that would look like in practice?

Any thoughts on the Slow Damage example here?

Lemme give it a go.

  • Compared to the likes of irredeemable villains (Lord Tirek, Cozy Glow, Queen Chrysalis), villains that either didn't get redeemed or got redeemed too late (Svengallop, Zesty Gourmand, Lightning Dust, Wind Rider), the most utterly unambiguously reviled character in the show... is Fluttershy's pet rabbit Angel Bunny. What was his worst crime? Being bratty, and mean to his owner. While many characters who hurt Fluttershy in some way, get some manner hate from her rabid fans, Angel Bunny takes the cake, as he is the closest thing Fluttershy has to family in Ponyville. What makes this worse, is that even after Angel hatred somewhat died down after some episodes that showed he truly cared, even his offscreen death of old age didn't stop the hate.

Bumping cuz of this example on South Park:

Thing is, while some people may find Scott to be a jerk, that last sentence seems contradictory. I've definitely seen people feed bad for Scott at the end of the episode, even if his whole shtick is being an awful teenage bully. People definitely Love to Hate Cartman more, but that's because Scott only has two appearances (one of which is in a Banned Episode) so he never got much attention beyond being the victim of Cartman's Moral Event Horizon anyway.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

I think the entire scenario is too comically exaggerated for the trope to apply. You're laughing at the audacity of the scenario, not actually cheering on the "villain" over the "jerk".

Yeah, that's so cartoonish that neither actually seem like valid characters for the scenario. It's way too over the top on both ends.

Can I add this to YMMV.Dhar Mann? Watching the Mischief Mikey videos really make me despise the adults more then Mikey himself.

Mikey is meant to be rooted against for being a naughty brat who chooses the easy way out instead of putting in actual hard work and lying constantly, but the adults in his videos, especially his own mother, are far more despised for for often lying in turn to Mikey (one of which include pretending he’s suffering an allergic reaction, far worse then even Mikey went) and punishing him in heavy-handed ways while letting his younger brother Jayden off with none, and on the flipside making Mikey downright sympathetic.
Just checking before I add it.

I wouldn't call Mikey a "villain" though

More an Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist case, though.

If it doesn't qualify though, I won't do it then.

Yeah, I don't think he does. The trope is about the contrast between unrealistic and fun bad guys versus realistically unlikable jerks.

  • Jerks Are Worse Than Villains: In a cast full of murderous, psychotic gangsters, one of the most easily detestable characters in the entire show is Tony's elderly mother, Livia. Although she's largely divorced from the show's violence and more serious crimes, her deep-rooted narcissism, passive-aggressive sniping, actively spreading misery to everyone she meets, manipulative tactics, and playing the victim at every opportunity, make her a far more likely person you'd actually encounter in your life and lacks any of the suave or "coolness" factor the other mobsters have. This is on top of her being a terrible mother, spouse, and employer, incredibly racist, and anti-Semitic.

Livia tried to get his own son assassinated. That’s one of the most villainous things ever done by a character in this show. Not to mention, her abuse indirectly resulted created the monster Tony Sopranos is today. While most of her screentime she’s just a narcissistic asshole, I don’t she qualifies for this trope when she’s deliberately written to be one of the most unlikeable and villainous characters of the entire cast. To be honest, I think Janice is a much better example here.

Well as I said I think she’s still more villainous than most of the cast, but that’s arguable. Could stay maybe as most of her screentime is just being an insufferable selfish old woman rather than doing anything villainous, even if her long term abuse and attempted assassination are some of the most heinous deeds ever committed on this show.

Hi everyone, new troper here and this my first post on this discussion.

Do you guys think that Chief Dunby from LEGO City Undercover fits into this trope? Because even though you can like Rex Fury and Forrest Blackwell for their funny moments, Dunby can be disliked for his Bad Boss tendencies and being jerk to Chase and only Chase. But what do you guys think of this?

It's an audience reaction. I can't tell how the audience feels.

Filip, you need to explain how the "audience" feels. You can’t just explain why the character might be hated; you need to describe how the fans feel about the character. None of us are familiar with the work in question, so we can’t provide any feedback.

[up] I will tomorrow search the internet if the others have the same mindset towards Dunby like me, but I for now will bring myself as a example. Namely Dunby is my least favourite character in the game due to being glory hound who takes credit for things that others did (he claimed that he founded the hammer that Rex used to escape, while it in reality it was Chase) and for being jerk to Chase and only Chase, using his status as police chief to bully him. And even though he becomed more kinder at the of the game, it still didn't redemeed him in my eyes. But what do you think about that?

This is for audience opinions, so if other people hate him this significantly more than the actual villains, it can be added. But it can't just be a means for you to shoehorn your opinion on this guy. Generally if you have to seek out opinions afterwards to justify yours, it's probably not a good sign.

[up] As I said in my previous post, I will today search the internet if the others think of him the same as me. I just wrote this rant to show how Dunby can be disliked by other players.
