Some times the Dub makes things unintentionally / intentionally scarier.

Okay, a buzz saw trap. Seen that in a bunch of action movies.

They then turned the mundane buzz saw into a soul-killing device that sentences you to an eternity of cruel torment.

So I had a random theory about the Yugioh Zexal manga that Luna is actually the manga version of Shark's sister Rio.

As in, she will take the place of Rio as Shark's sister.

How's that grab you dudes?

How are the different manga anyways? I started on GX's back before it got official translations and while I enjoyed it I never finished it. I haven't read any of the others either outside of a bit of the original which I couldn't really get into.

I've only seen the completed GX manga, and a bit of the 5D's manga:

  • The former has Manjoume / Chazz as a total Bad Ass rather than going through the massive Break the Haughty that he experienced in the anime.

  • The latter has Aki as a Turbo Duelist from the beginning (and she even beats Yusei in a quick match they have when they meet).

Can't say much more about 5ds, but many characters in the GX manga are a bit different (and it also has it's now characters).

Zexal manga involves the revelation that Dr. Faker was actually dead the whole time and Mr. Heartland was both in charge and a guy who ruined over 600 people's lives in long cons. And then he's betrayed by his Dragon, Kyoji Yagumo, who it turns out is a nihilist who wants to continue the Numbers War simply to obliterate all worlds "because their very existence is a crime". As a whole, he seems to act like some kind of nihilistic trial lawyer...wait.

And then he takes the duels to some inbetween place, wherein he reveals the big hitting revelations...

Namely, his original sin is that he became a professional duelist and in the process ruined Shark's rep in order to make life better for his little brother, Yuji. Except Yuji was actually an Identical Stranger who murdered the original Yuji and took his place. Kyoji then apparently flipped out and murdered fake Yuji with his bare hands. And then he found his Numbers, thanks to a Benefactor who comes up shortly. When the duel turns ugly for Kyoji, the Benefactor turns up and She promptly takes over for him.

This Benefactor? Her name's E Rah, the Goddess of Despair. She claims she can scent out hope and crush it. Think a deified Junko Enoshima, and you have her. She promptly uses a weird strategy based on destroying her own cards and creating E Rah versions of the protagonists' monsters. She also uses a trap card that makes her life points equal to her monsters' attack points. So she thrashes the protagonists silly for a few turns with Evil Counterparts of their monsters. Then Yuma's Dad appears and reveals that his son and Astral are two halves of one soul, and that all the heroes + Kyoji are reincarnated alien priests.

And by now Shark lost due to a combo E Rah pulled off, making use of the fact her life points always equal her monsters' attack points, meaning she can pay life points as much as she wants and they won't actually change. And then Kaito summoned a new Number, and took out her main combo. She has now summoned a bunch of Anti monsters, and made Anti-Hope, God of Despair using them.

We have not seen yet what Anti-Hope looks like, but its component parts resemble bound representations of the Elements the protagonists apparently embody.

So, yeah, the Zexal manga rushed right for Mind Fuck territory and never stopped going. The Big Bad has cards called "Strain" monsters, which activate when destroyed, becoming Overlay units on her opponents' monsters. She can then summon E Rah monster versions of monsters her opponents control. Different Strain monsters apparently give her E Rah monsters different effects. Strain Nuke, for example, gave Utopia E Rah the ability to attack every monster at once. I'd guess the Strain monsters represent the Strain people go through that causes them to give in to despair.

Shark actually found out how to lower her life points, he got a new Number that let him decrease her monsters' atk by 1000 permanently. Meaning every time he lowered the E Rah monsters' atk with its effect, he took 3000 off her life points.

...Granted, she promptly focused all her attention on him, but due to her doing that, Kaito was able to dissemble her combo.

Speaking of the early manga, while Duel Monsters was my favorite game and I think most of the fandom would agree, anyone have any of the others they liked? I thought Monster Fighter had potential; looked fun and VERY toyetic too.

What I love about Pyramid of Light!Kaiba is that he's reminiscent of his original manga self, with having a straight villainous role. He's so eager to take revenge on Yugi he ends up almost killing him, and gloats while draining his life with every attack. I doubt all of it was Anubis's influence, since Kaiba would have had those desires in mind to begin with—they only began conflicting when he tried to destroy the Pyramid at the end of the duel.

I mean, between having Peten the Dark Clown stab Yami through the heart, saying stuff like "Any last requests?" and "Then it's your funeral," I get the feeling Kaiba did know what was going on but was too stubborn and set on revenge to care. (His energy was being drained too, after all.)

Though I do wonder what would have happened if he had won and Yami and/or Yugi died because of his actions. (Assuming Anubis didn't just destroy/conquer everything soon after.)

Manga Mokuba>Anime Mokuba in my opinion. He only gets kidnapped in Duelist Kingdom and threatens to cut off Yugi's fingers in his first appearance.

Found an interesting post about that creepy cult in Pegasus's basement and differences between versions. (Was it ever explained what happened to them AFTER the duel?)

Is Nitemare canon, you think? The Bigger Bad from the early video games? He was said to be the creator of the Shadow Games, which is obviously a pretty big influence on the backstory, and was created by Takahashi himself...

[up] I don't think he is. The video games he appears in create a Continuity Snarl with both the manga and the anime. From what I get, the Shadow Games were created from the Millennium Items or at least it's magic was able to be used (at the very least in the manga due to it not having the Doma/Waking the Dragons arc that the anime has). They never actually did elaborate on the origin of the Shadow Games that much.

I must say Forbidden Memories was pretty bold to write the Millennium World arc before Takahashi had actually written the Millennium World arc. tongue

The character Siamun Muran (Grandpa's Egyptian counterpart) had actually appeared in several of these early games some years before Takahashi himself used him, so I wonder who created him?

Darknite/Nitemare cracks me up because of his massive beard, informal way of speaking, and this scene.

He's a LOT less funny in The Falsebound Kingdom, though...

Apparently Disney Yu-Gi-Oh AMVs are a thing.

I found this one first, set to I'll Make A Man Out of You from Mulan. (Love what they did with poor Ryou Bakura XD) https://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=KR8S_eSTELU
