As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openIncrease line spacing for thread lists
The new design comes with a condensed line spacing. Give those entries some air to breathe. Compare new look to the old look.
Edited by eroockclosed Fast-track for Main/ Redirects
The Main/ namespace is locked down now, but could we have some kind of request queue for redirects so that they don't have to go through YKTTW?
Let's say I wanted to launch a trope called Main/ManRunningInCircles, but I also want a redirect called Main/WomanRunningInCircles to cover female examples (and possibly Main/MenRunningInCircles and Main/WomenRunningInCircles as well). Do I have to go through YKTTW four times for this, adding boring proposals which take up space in the list and are unlikely to attract hats?
It would be nice to have a button next to "WikiWord" (which really seems like it should be "Customize WikiWord" but meh) called "Add Redirect". Similar to customizing a WikiWord, you can use this feature to send a request for a new redirect, which must be approved by a mod before launching. This would also be more convenient in general than the old route of creating a new page with [[redirect:New Page]] in it.
Edited by Prime32openPages created with incorrect WikiWords.
It's not a big issue, but pages that were create under an incorrect Wiki Word compared to what should be used are a problem. Notably, with the new custom title system, when trying to submit a correction it default to the creation Wiki Word, which may not be be the most expected to link to it afterward.
For example: Manga/KamisamaNoIutoori should have been created as Manga/KamiSamaNoIuToori, before being given the custom title "Kami-sama no Iu Tooru".
There should be a method to correct those improper page titles; trying to edit with the corrected title doesn't change a thing.
openSidebar Suggestion
Would it be possible to have the sidebar scroll with the page? I think that would eliminate a lot of the complaints about the "empty space" below it, without some of the more awkward work-arounds.
Maybe also make the "Resources" and "Crucial Browsing" tabs collapsable? That way people on lower resolution can get to the bottom of the list if they need to. The old, *old* site used to do that, didn't it?
openBe able to choose any page in a thread
Be able to go to any page in a thread without having to go deeper in a thread, for example if I was on the first page of a sixty page thread, and wanted to go to page 35. At the moment I'd have to go to page 10, 15, etc (or something like that) rather than directly to the page I wanted.
closed PM Notification
Could the big green "You have a PM!" banner come back? I rather prefer it to clicking on the tiny avatar-badge number.
openPictures on Recent Edits back?
There used to be pictures in Recent Edits so you could easily see what was edited, such as a character page or a funny page having the icons at the start of the page line. Now it just shows a work page without any indications. Any chance those could return?
Edited by lalalei2001closedRe-add the option for a left hand side menu?
It just looks horible with the menu on the left hand side, every thing is right hand loaded and it just bothersome, is there any chance for the option to re-add the option to flip menu side?
closed YKTTW Issues
- No check marks for new replies
- Probably as a result of that, no option to "parachute" down to the first of the new replies
- When you open a ykttw in a new tab it's just called "YKTTW" and not what the proposed trope's name is.
- Red Links are all blue.
The rest of my issues with ykttw might just be "I don't like change, WAH!" so I'll keep them to myself for now.
closedRestore dark page breaks
A page break as it is now is so invisible you can barely tell it's there. Restoring it to how it looked in earlier versions would be cool just for the sake of legibility. Before it looked like a dark unbroken line but now it's super light gray dotted lines.
closed YKTTW Issues
I love the new design, all. But I had a couple of issues to bring up, if they haven't been already.
Can we get a new tab in the Watchlist for YKTTW stuff (open YKTT Ws, launched YKTT Ws, and followed YKTT Ws)? That was very helpful.
Can we have the option to look at the source code for comments in YKTTW? That was useful for adding examples suggested by other people. The old version let us edit the comments, which I don't think is necessary, but at least being able to copypasta the code would be nice.
Thanks
closed Option to disable video advertisements
There should be an option for mobile data users to completely disable video adverts so that their data wouldn't be wasted and that the site would properly load.
closed Readding watchlist button and other buttons at the bottom of a forum thread page
As requested here, for navigability reasons.
openSquarer subpage buttons
The new subpage buttons look nice when alone, but when there's many subpages (see e.g. Doctor Who) they get hard to read, as well as taking up more room. Could they be squared off a bit, please?
closed Is there a way to widen the layout?
Right now there are massive fat grey bars on either side of the page. With those and the "Follow TV Tropes" column on the side, the actual page content itself is less than half the screen. Can we have an option to do away with the grey bars?
closed Not requiring an account for display options?
Having to sign up for an account to use the display options strikes me as rather needless. I find it doubtful that people would sign up for the site purely for those options. Why aren't these available to all visitors?
closed ATT: Watching topics
There should be a way to highlight or be notified of ATT, etc. topics that you have posted in.
Not so much as completely rolling back the changes, but could something be added to allow us to view the site before this most recent update? The "TV Tropes 1. 3 Released!" thread is basically an echo chamber of people asking to change it back because the new design is boring, gray and looks sloppy.
