My annoyance of this trope most likely steems from one story where Mickey has a dinner with his in-laws, but the in-laws are instead... Minnie's uncle and aunt. Does this means that Minnie's parents died after she was born and she was raised by her uncle and aunt?!

The bigger question is, if they're described as Mickey's "in-laws," that would mean he and Minnie were married, which to my knowledge they never were. But beyond that, if Mickey and Minnie were married, any of Minnie's relatives would be Mickey's in-laws (uncle in-law, aunt in-law), not just her parents.

Minnie was shown having both parents alive and well in the Golden Age comic strips.

I was just confused why writers of this story didn't used her parents but her uncle and aunt instead. At least what redemeed this story in my eyes was its humor and fact that Minnie's uncle is a badass secret agent. The last part of my last post was just complaining and outburst of negative emotions for which I sincerely apologize.

I don't think you have anything to apologize about, it's not like you swore or anything...

[up][up] By in-laws I meant that the story was your typical "meet parents of your girlfriend/future wife" plot but Minnie's parents were replaced by her uncle and aunt.

Anyway, if someone is interested, here's link to this story.

Yeah, for some reason, Disney really does not like marriages either.

At least Mickey and Minnie are a healthy relationship.

[up] Donald and Daisy in the reboot of Ducktales as well. The relantionship of their comic selves is a different story...

I think that conventional writerly wisdom is that having characters be married limits what you can do with them. Having Donald flirt with a villainess or having said villainess attempt to seduce him (in a Disney-fied way, of course) would take on a much different character if he were married to Daisy; the same is true of Daisy's continued flirtation with Gladstone. Fictional characters originally conceived as single usually stay that way.

Goofy, in the iterations of him where Max is around, is supposed to have been married, though we never see his wife.

When does Donald ever flirt with someone else, or someone else with him, these days?

I kinda wish someone did, to be honest. Daisy's love triangle is stale like last month's bread. It's also not a great look in an age where we are looking for better female role models in comics.

Oh wait, there's Oona, the cavegirl. Forgot about that one.

I don't think we should really look to the Ducks to be role models. Handled correctly they're wonderfully complex and varied characters, with a host of flaws as well as virtues, but I wouldn't call any of them role models, at least not consistently.

I agree, but with Daisy being somewhat of a Smurfette to the Duck universe, that is often what she ends up as when feminists want to write a feminist female character. I mean, who else are they gonna pick, Magica?

Also, Daisy is rarely written as a particularly complex character, which is why feminists like to latch onto her, I suppose. Last one I read was "Daisy joins the Duckburg police force!" Of course something like that never sticks.

I found that one particularly hilarious, by the way, considering how awful the Duckburg PD tends to be in Detective Mickey stories. Always too busy partying to solve any crimes... grin

[up] What always gets me about those sorts of complaints is that the people making them fail to note that the characters they complain about are generally no more flawed or exaggerated than the characters around them. Adjusted according to their complaints, the character in question—in this case Daisy—would end up being the only virtuous, competent character surrounded by a pack of childishness. Actually, now that I say that, I realize we've seen that scenario a lot...

None of the animated adaptations of Gladstone ever show him with any interest on Daisy. Even Mortimer sometimes still remembers he was supposed to feel attracted to Minnie.

There are lots of Duck female characters a feminist could write.

Goldie herself, Dickie Duck, now Della, Grandma Duck in a Badass Grandma way, and so on. It's just that adaptation writers don't care, even DT 17 for all it flaunts about plucking old comics characters out only went to the Italian well once (with Rockerduck's assistant Jeeves, and even there it was a fully different character with the name of Jeeves).

Who is Dickie Duck?

And yeah, Grandma is written pretty consistently feminist, I'd say. But I was specifically thinking about someone in Daisy's role.

I think it's so funny that when the Three Caballeros show wanted to give Daisy a cooler than Donald boyfriend instead of using Gladstone, they pull out some character who hasn't been seen in like five decades.

[up][up]Goldie's granddaughter, a teenage duck with blonde hair. She was created in the sixties as a Ye-Ye girl and used to be huge in Brazil. They still use her very regularly in Italy.

[up] Huh, sounds fun.

[up][up] Oh yeah, who was he again? Wait, Daisy was absolutely terrible in that show. Xandra would make for a better girlfriend, to be honest.

The most frequent modern age use for Dickie is making her a junior reporter.

Sometimes she works with Fethry, and AU stories tend to ship them even though he's like a generation older than her, go figure.

Oh, it's Italian, that explains it. Funny how different this universe can be in different regions of the world.
