Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.
This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.
Common problems include:
- Conversation on the Main Page
- Flame Bait
- Squicky content
- Impossible in Real Life
Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.
If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.
If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.
Before adding to the crowner:
- The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
- There must be support from others in thread.
- Any objections should be addressed.
- Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.
When adding to the crowner:
- Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
- Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
- An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).
In order for a crowner to pass:
- Must have been up for a minimum of a week
- There must be a 2:1 ratio
- If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
- Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
- Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page
Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need a crowner vote.
As per Real Life Troping, we never trope unscripted real life sports — so sports tropes where RL examples would only apply to those scenarios don't need a crowner vote.
Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.
After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

Notes:
- This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
- Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
- As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
- The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

I'm not asking to add entire indices. I guess what I'm asking for is to move those types of tropes into a slightly different category where No Real Life Examples Please has the same sort of probationary standard as Real Life sections over all.
Fight smart, not fair.I think Unwanted False Faith, God Guise, Stop Worshipping Me, and similar "X religion is objectively FALSE" tropes should not have Real Life sections, and should be on NRLEP, because they invite accusations that real religions are false/wrong. There may be real religious movements for which there is historical evidence that the founder was a liar or unwilling, but TV Tropes is not a place that can research and present such evidence objectively and fairly. Also, such tropes often rely on outside (authorial) statements that the religion is false, which we don't have in Real Life.

Oppression anywhere is a threat to democracy everywhere.I added all three of those to the crowner. I don't know of any other such "religion X is false" tropes, though, so you'll have to add them yourself.
Following the TRS thread on Rich Bitch, I went through The Jerk Index to see if there was anything that needed to be here. Most of them were either No Real Life Examples Please, or the Real Life section had generic examples, studies and writings about the subject, or backed up by actual facts, so I didn't see a need to add them here.
JerkWithAHeartOfGold.Others does have a lot of Real Life examples, but they're ultimately about highlighting the good they do, so I think it's okay to have them there. There are still a few examples with no context that needs it, though.

The Internet misuses, abuses, and overuses everything.Added Starfish Language. "Any language will seem like this to a native speaker of an unrelated language family, and often even to those who speak a related language. Languages are unique little snowflakes." That should be enough to discard the Real Life examples (NOT the constructed language examples!). The whole list has an annoying "Check out how weird/difficult the language I'm studying is !" vibe over it.
EDIT: Also, Rescued from the Scrappy Heap. We can't have Real Life Scrappies, having this one makes no sense.

I'm gonna have to agree with that. I'm not personally offended (I thought "Swedish is slightly tonal, as if it weren't unpronounceable enough already" was actually kinda funny), but I don't really think they fit the trope. They're not incomprehensible languages (even sign language to a blind person, as there are touch-based sign languages), and not even bizarre once you learn just a few things about them. I mean, I thought Nahuatl sounds rather bizarre and incomprehensible, but once I learned a few words and syntax rules, it made a lot more sense, even if I can't understand more than, well, a few words.

The Internet misuses, abuses, and overuses everything. How about Manipulative Bastard? If nothing else I think that you could cut it by 75% by putting in an example of "Most politicians are seen this way at some point in their careers"
Edit: At a count that section lists 12 politicians and three others (people who work with children, cats and plants)

Rescued from the Scrappy Heap is on the crowner but I don't see a post. What's wrong with its real life section?
The child is father to the man —OedipusI think that one's okay if we clean everything post-WWI, or 1950 or something like that. While it's about manipulators, it's still about those who're very good at it, so I don't think it's all that insulting.
Not sure. It's about people who were once impopular but who gained respect back. I deleted an exception. Those we don't need.

The Internet misuses, abuses, and overuses everything.I added Rescued from the Scrappy Heap. I figured, if we can't talk about Real Life scrappies, there's no point in describing how they can stop being scrappies.
There's not much complaining though, it's maybe unnecessary.
Some time ago, I suggested to make Proud Merchant Race and Proud Scholar Race No Real Life Examples Please, following the example of Proud Warrior Race (discussion here). Maddy approved, but I didn't do anything then.
Now that we have this thread, I added them two tropes to the crowner.

Let's just say and leave it at that. So, uh... Jesus Christ. Snuff Film has real life examples, cataloged by date, with links to videos. It has a caution warning, but still, WTF? I don't even think we need a crowner; this needs to go now.
We're not just men of science, we're men of TROPE!Killed.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerThe Cat Mod already deleted it, you mean
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanSo, how many votes are we looking for before we call a page? I know I've asked this a few times, but I have yet to get an answer. I'm more than willing to deal with some of these as soon as possible, but I just want to know when I am supposed to do it.
Bigotry will NEVER be welcome on TV Tropes. All the threads that use one crowner to vote on various things that are independent from each other use a 2/1, at least 10 votes criterion.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanBecause no one else seems to feel like doing so, calling Ambiguously Gay, Ambiguously Jewish, Sissy Villain, We Will Have Euthanasia in the Future, Insufferable Genius, Rich Bitch, Unwanted False Faith, Stop Worshipping Me, Starfish Language, God Guise, and Rescued from the Scrappy Heap. Wow, that's a lot.
Bigotry will NEVER be welcome on TV Tropes.Idea: instead of making a new crowner all the time, we edit the crowner and put a "already voted, changed accordingly" notice in it, link to a screen shot or some such, and then everybody switches their vote to down so it's out of the way.
Fight smart, not fair.Added Cult just because peoples opinions on what is a cult and what is a legitimate religion can vary, and we might prefer to avoid that discussion. I'm not entirely convinced that it needs to go, but it definitely needs to be brought up.
Bigotry will NEVER be welcome on TV Tropes. Not even sure we need a page on snuff films, especially now, except possibly as a Useful Note.
I amended the crowner to clarify what we're going for here; we're not (at least, I'm not) trying to get rid of Real Life sections entirely.
The child is father to the man —OedipusSo do we all change our votes to Down on the concluded pages?
Also, I want to nominate the following:
- Evil Overlord — yes, real-life dictators are awful, but we don't need TV Tropes to remind us that Hitler was bad, because most people are aware of that. Some of the other examples are rather less clear.
- Scary Amoral Religion — Religion of Evil lite. We don't need real religions accused of this.
- Path of Inspiration — Much like Scam Religion and Religion of Evil, this is not something to throw at real religions.

Oppression anywhere is a threat to democracy everywhere.Arcade, no need to change votes on the decided tropes, with the strikethrough being used on those already finished.
(Edited the poll header to reflect the strikethrough thing.)

All your safe space are belong to TrumpBut the open ones can get lost or go unnoticed among the finished ones.
Oppression anywhere is a threat to democracy everywhere.^ Hmm. I didn't think about that issue.
Perhaps entirely removing from voting (if possible, never looked at the editing mechanism before) the ones already decided, and post them in the OP of the thread so they're not re-nominated?
All your safe space are belong to Trump
So, what are we looking for before we call a page?
Bigotry will NEVER be welcome on TV Tropes.
