Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

Finally got round to finishing VI. It's a good game, probably not as impressive to my modern eyes as it would have been back then. Felt like it was banging its head against hardware limitations and seemed unfinished in a lot of ways. I really liked the characters.

The ending was disappointingly generic after beating Kefka (who was somewhat trivialised by Trance Ultima spam).

Final fantasy VI is one that I got to the final dungeon but never got to Kefka and now I can't play it on my Playstation 1 any more. Likewise I can't finish FF IV and FF V either. I was in the final dungeons in both. I always hated Omega since he was on the path you have to take in the Void.

Kinda jaded to that with how often it's done with anti-heroes.

I didn't play FFVI when it came out, so I probably missed the potential "magic" when I played it years later. It was fine, but I always felt the art design was too much of a shift from the previous two games.

[up][up] That's true. To be honest the only reason it gets to me now is because I thought he lived when I first played and it wasnt until later that I realized he stayed behind to die.

Speaking of FFVI, I was lurking of Game FA Qs and there was one user who made a strong argument as to why Terra is the main character of the game. When I was in my 'honeymoon' phase of the game, I assumed all the characters could qualify as the main character of the game. In reality I just saw what I wanted to see as not every character was important to the story. Terra herself has strong themes of the story and her arc wasn't just learning love.

Square Enix just said in their latest earnings report that they will "aggressively pursue" a multiplatform strategy.

The only games I could expect to stay exclusive is the VII Remake trilogy, and even that has been given a crack.

And how will they finance a multi platform game considering FF VII remake was financed by deals with Sony from what I hear?

Sony cant pay them enough money to keep exclusives when PS 5 sales are lagging THAT much.

Also there is a good chance that the VIIR-3 is going to have its budget slashed massively.

I've heard from my friend that Rebirth felt like a lot of spinning it's wheels and bloated it's content to justify the budget and existence.

The PS 5 isn't doing so hot is it?

Both Xbox and PS consoles are not doing well at all. They have essentially flatlined due to lack of 'must play' exclusives and the nuts cost of games due to graphics requirements. Which is why Sony and Xbox are laying off thousands and closing studios left and right. Only Nintendo is doing well and PC is still growing at a good rate.

Unless MS and Sony actually attempt to innovate or just copy the Switch/Steamdeck... there wont be a PS 7 or Xbox whatever as the death spiral will not stop, there will be a true crash.

EDIT: I say PS 7 cause people are already making games for the PS 6, it legit takes 6-7 years to make 'AAA' games now. Which is stupid as hell.

I think what I've heard about any possible "Video Game Crash 2" is that it's caused from the opposite way of how the first one happened.

Xbox did take a major L with Starfield, and they aren't getting the FF money.

I looked through Square's financial report, and their games actually made them 38% less money this last financial year than they did the previous year, and this is not including the costs from cancelling a bunch of games recently. And what's crazier is that even without the operational costs factored, their games only made 1% more revenue than the previous year.

That means that the despite Square's CEO saying how they need to take resources away from their AA games and focus everything into AAA development (which is why they cancelled all those games), their big AAA games in FFXVI and FFVII Rebirth plus a few other titles released this last year made roughly the same money in sales as the large amount of AA titles they released the previous year, at greater operational costs. Meaning they made less money off their big hyped AAA games.

Like, this doesn't bode well for Square and Final Fantasy as a whole.

At least this might scare them off from Final Fantasy X-3.
