The Straw Character entry caught my eye because it comes off as applying ACI to creator intent. Is that kosher?

[up][up][up] Would this be an appreciate format:

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Several reasons for why Wonder Woman acts so cruelly in the pilot and yet no one important is bothered by it is put forth by various reviews and other viewers:
      • This shows stars the Bizarro Wonder Woman, Justice Lord Wonder Woman (though SF Debris has noted that Justice Lord Wonder Woman is less extreme than this version), Flashpoint Wonder Woman, or One Earth Regime Wonder Woman.
      • People are too terrified to stand up to Wonder Woman and have come to internalize it.
      • We're actually watching an insane Amazonian who has usurped the real Diana's identity. "Bonkers Betty", perhaps?
      • Wonder Woman is rich enough that she's able to pay off the right officials.
Nash!Wonder Woman: Laws are for poor people!
      • She's actually a villain with a really good PR department.
      • Her actions are tolerated because thus far, no matter how brutal her methods, she's always been right about the kind of people she goes after.
      • The people, as is often the case with violent antiheroes in superhero shows (The Judge, Rumour, The Justice Lords, Lunatic, etc.) approve of a brutal vigilante giving scum what they deserve.
      • She was intended to horrify the audience with how her killing and torture garnered support, and would have eventually denounced those things as she developed into a "proper" character who agreed with the writers' sensibilities. (Not too unlike what happened with Arrow a couple of years later.)
      • She's trying to sabotage her public life but the media always gives her a break.

I'm questioning the bolded because it has to do with authorial intent. Are we allowed to apply AC Is to the creators?

Found this in Thor: Love and Thunder:

  • Apparently, in one version of the movie, there was a running gag where characters thought the goats are evil. The final tag of the movie would have revealed yes, they were.

It obviously has nothing to do with the trope, but could be moved to the Trivia page assuming it's correct information. The problem is that I'm not finding any evidence that supports this theory. Should I just delete this?

I mean, that's just... not in the finished product, or at least not the version I watched. And if it's true, it's still not ACI.

From YMMV.Scarlet Lady:

  • From the same episode, is Rose dating both Juleka and Ali at the end of it a result of Rose being too innocent to see the implications and neither minding, or is Rose a Covert Pervert who fully knows what she is doing?

I feel kind of uncomfortable by this entry acting like there must be some kind of "implications" behind the idea of Rose consensually dating two people at the same time. When reading, it seemed like a pretty straightforward case of polyamory to me? The entry seems to be implying there must be something gross to it, which makes me kind of uncomfortable especially considering they're kids. I dunno, thoughts?

Necro!

Found on YMMV.Doctor Who S 37 E 1 The Woman Who Fell To Earth:

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: The two dislikes on Ryan's video about his nan might not be people on the internet being mean, but rather it could be the equivalent of reacting with the sad face on Facebook—an expression of displeasure at the situation rather than disliking what Ryan said. This is especially likely if those two dislikes came from people of Grace's age, who tend to have less experience with the nuance of likes and dislikes.

This is about two random dislikes on a video used as Book Ends. The dislikes aren't acknowledged and are on screen for maybe a minute. This just feels like random speculation over something not even attached to a character.

[up]That sounds like a reach and speculative to me so I feel it should be cut.

I happened to find a strange entry in YMMV.Mulan:

  • The Emperor is portrayed as a Cool Old Guy in the movie, which makes zero sense when you remember that he was the one who condoned, enforced, and possibly even created the sexist laws that are in Mulan's society and possibly has been for decades. All this makes his sudden turnaround feel rather insincere and more of a way of saving face after Mulan publically challenged his rules. Then there's the fact this guy is kinda...sorta...you know...a DICTATOR?!
This reads less like an Alternative Character Interpretation and more like Unintentionally Unsympathetic or something, and it's a bit bashy as well. What should we do with it?

I just say cut it. It's reductive to claim that one guy is responsible for all the Double Standards in society. Plus, the movie was set in ancient times. You'd be hard pressed to find a government back then that we wouldn't consider a dictatorship.

Seconded.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

YMMV.My Little Pony Make Your Mark

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Opaline is the big one.
    • Her general treatment of Misty, does it stem from an inability to control her anger? is it caused by sadism? or is there a deeper more emotional reason? to her credit, she is never shown nor implied to actually physically assault Misty, which she could easily do if she desired, she also never seems to display any enjoyment from mistreating her as well. Misty, for her part, while certainly wanting to please Opaline, doesn't seem to show much love for her overall (though justified given how afraid she is of her), she also never calls Opaline 'mother' at all either despite her being her adoptive mother, perhaps Opaline feels hurt by all this hence her harsh treatment of her?
    • Her saying she doesn't care about Misty in "Cutie Blossom Bash", does she really mean it or is she in denial? it is noticeable that she was about to check up on Misty before stopping herself short and delivering her "I don't care" line. The camera even makes a point of this by showing a close-up of her hoof just stopping, as if to hint at something...
    • Her still keeping Misty around despite not really needing her anymore after stealing Sparky's magic, she claims she needs Misty to "take notes" but this feels like a weak excuse at best. Is she really still keeping Misty around just for taking notes? or is it because very deep down she secretly likes Misty's company and is actually afraid of losing her and being alone but is too prideful to admit it? adding more to the speculation is the fact that whenever Misty spends a while away from her and comes back, Opaline, in her own way of course, expresses concern at her for being gone for so long.
    • Her wanting to befriend Celestia and Luna, was her attempt to befriend them genuine? or was she just looking at an opportunity for status? though her sad reaction to their rejection does suggest the former. Speaking of which...
    • Celestia and Luna's cold reaction towards Opaline, were they just that snobby in their younger years? or was it because they felt she was up to no good?

I believe this is over the line for legit ACI to Draco in Leather Pants? Any objections to cutting? Anything worth salvaging from this?

I have some questions about this entry from YMMV.Back To The Future 1:

  • Young Lorraine finally ends her infatuation with the sense that she's kissing her brother. Is it really a sense of her relation with Marty? Or could it simply be the fear of God engendered by Lorraine's unexpected aggressive kissing?

I’m a bit confused about this. Is it implying that divine intervention was what caused her to back off? Because that’s not really hinted at in the film.

that scene is just the final joke ending that subplot - it doesn’t imply that Lorraine knew Marty was her son, or that god revealed anything, it’s just her saying it’s weird and the audience has context for WHY. easy cut.

[up][up]I also say cut. It's a weird entry and seems to miss the joke.
