There's no word yet on whether this is going to be a replacement for the Nintendo 3DS or the Wii U, but the fact that they feel even the Wii U needs a replacement is not good. The system isn't even 5 years old yet!
This is extremely bad news for the console industry, it just reeks of bad news like on the Sega level.
And the fact that Nintendo will now be developing mobile games only compounds the issue.

Erm... guys. All we know is that more information will be revealed next year. That does not mean it will be released next year. If information comes in 2016 and the actual release is in 2017, the Wii U will have lasted 5 years, depending on when in 2017 the release is.
That's also assuming that this is a hybrid system like many people are guessing it is. If not, this is likely the 3DS successor, which is unsurprising at this point.
Furthermore, it's standard practice to be working on the next console immediately after the previous one's release.
Oh, please. Nintendo is a console manufacturer. Of course they are already working on the next generation. It's what they do.
Breaking news: grass grows, birds fly, and Scout hurts people.

No one made a fuss about Microsoft releasing Windows 10 only 3 or so years after Windows 8. I don't see why this would be different.
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."Don't think I can trust the news in regards to a new console.
It's Over Anakin, I have the high ground! How do you mean? It was an announcement from Nintendo.
I'm quite happy to
y'know
wait.
For information.
Like... really solid information and not just a codename that could mean any kind of hardware.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectJudging from the way he talked about it, he probably only revealed they had a new console in development to prove they do in fact still have "strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business". So maybe they're just announcing this much far earlier than they normally would because of that (like others have said, it's only a confirmation of what we already know anyway).
Even if it is just information, that was still pretty quick. Maybe it will be a traditional console, and Wii will stay for motion controls? I'm interested to see how this goes.
please call me "XionKuriyama" or some variation, thanks! | What is the good deed that you can do right now?Count my hyped for the NX, but I don't really like the fact that Nintendo has started making Smartphone games...
A the very least, I'm hoping they managed to somehow keep the use of Wii Remotes in the NX. I really don't want to go out and buy new controls for a new system, and the Wiimotes work great in party games even if you aren't using them for motion controls.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Dang I have not been a console gamer for a while but this info release announcement does feel kinda quick
That said, from there to "Oh my gosh it is the end of the world everything is going to hell" is a statement worthy of responding with the following video.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothes"Nintendo making smartphone games"
Well its been real Nintendo. Sorry we failed you!
How is that a failure or a bad move from Nintendo's part? Awesome as they are, they are still a profit-focused company, whose product are fun games.
Smartphone games are no less fun, or more fun, than console games, and they are just as if not more (according to latest trends) profitable. What's the issue here?
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesFun is a subjective term, anyway. I don't find most of them fun, but someone like my sister could be entertained. They're just branching out to a wider audience.
And it's not as if adding apps to their repertoire was a move they didn't first mention a few months ago.
I have a message from another time...Yeah, they'd be silly to keep money on the table for much longer. Hyperbole is also silly so stop it, people.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectWhen free to play, touch centric, 2-characters-the-rest-you-have-to-pay-$4.99-per-character-roster Smash bros and microtranaction riddled Animal Crossing games hit the app store this year, I don't think y'all will be quite as optimistic.

I'm going to wait for more information.
Heck the "You have an account and you can buy stuff with it and download it and play it as you wish" is not new, it has been part of the Wii Store since its inception...just cuz' they are branching out to mobile phones instead of the homebox du jour it does not mean they're done for...
has to do with this brand new thing that has been all over the place.
I heard it is called "The internet"
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesGame apps, unfortunately. This is a move which could be very dangerous if handled poorly.
The account thing could be good if it isn't like it is now.
Right now it's much worse than PSN, as your digital purchases are tied to your system, not your account. Lose your 3DS or have your Wii U break? Hope you didn't have too many digital games, buddy.
I have a message from another time...@Melon: That's a thing you can do? I am shocked, good sir.

Yep, NX. It's weird, but console codenames are typically kinda weird.
Also, Iwata pointed out Club Nintendo's successor is going to form the basis of the new system.
